Time Out says

A Yankee ninny causes comic turmoil during the Civil War in this poor reworking of Keaton's The General. Skelton is no match for Buster in any department and the script is clearly beyond salvation, even after Keaton himself had been hired for the gag sequences and his old director Sedgwick dragged from retirement to supervise the proceedings.
