Faith is the guiding principle behind Ron Howard’s second adaptation of a Dan Brown bestseller. Faith that this will match the $750 million worldwide gross of ‘The Da Vinci Code’ and they’ll all be in for lots of lovely Mammon. On this occasion, crisis hits the Vatican after the death of the Pope and the election of a new leader for the world’s billion Catholics. Four cardinals have been kidnapped, and worse still, a stashed-away vial of ultra-combustible anti-matter (stolen from the CERN labs in Switzerland) threatens to blow half of Rome to kingdom come. Enter Tom Hanks’s exposition-spouting symbologist to explain the historical basis and present implications of this attack from the self-styled ‘Illuminati’– men of Renaissance learning who went underground centuries ago after the Vatican moved against them, and are using modern technology to hit back.

The conflict between religion and science gestures towards thematic substance, but the film, unsurprisingly, takes a conciliatory line to give both sides of the argument their due. With only hours before the Vatican goes ka-boom! the story is pacy enough, despite the cast – Ewan McGregor’s peachy papal insider, grumpy Vatican security chief Stellan Skarsgård – needing to explain the plot every five minutes, while a miscast Hanks traces a string of conveniently planted clues and the clock ticks away. The re-creation of St Peter’s and the Sistine Chapel on the Hollywood backlot is a production achievement, yet the movie’s about as exciting as looking over someone’s shoulder while they finish a crossword.

I have read both The Davinci Code and Angels & Demons. I enjoyed them both and almost wish I didn't even bother to watch the movies. They weren't true to the story, but that seems to be the norm with book to movie formats. I felt the left out key details, which would have helped explain what was going on. I can't believe Dan Brown would sign off on these movies. The movie seemed rather dull with none of the action that was felt reading the book.

john

Brutal movie. Not very entertaining, pretty predictable, and when Ewen parachuted out of the helicopter, why didn't anyone catch him? Dan Brown's writing is something my six year old child could do, but even it is better than this movie.

It was very well done, despite a lot of variation from the novel. The mportant points were included and the removal of certain features in the book makes it suitable for a younger audience.

Brilliant film.....well worth the money. I haven't read the book and did not expect it to end the way it did. Tom Hanks was brilliant and Ron Howard just keeps getting better end better. better and better.

When this film finished i turned to my friend and i said "i feel like i have just watched tom hanks walking around old dusty buildings for 2 hours..." and i had. Well, to be fair he also sped from one church to next in a modest hatchback to intesnse orchestral music. They almost tricked me for a second...they almost tricked me into thinking i was excited. This film is a testament to how much a brilliant music score can do to make up for inadequacy. This film was Hans Zimmer with an unfortunate doody on top. I actually fell asleep in this film. I missed one of the curches...as i gather he went into the church and there was dust there. I woke up just in time to be massively offended by the ending. Let me emphasise that this film is NOT in any way shape or form anti religious. It had certainly gained converts for the catholic church. For some reason, which i cannopt figure out, the last half hour seemed to be an exercise in how far Ron Howard could get his head into the pope's arse. I sat open mouthed as he kneeled down and thrusted his head into the pope's arse. And then to my horror he squeezed in up to the shoulders, and by the end he was inside the pope's arse up to his waist. The film gave the following message: Scientists are becoming a bit rash with their dangerous experiments and they don't really know what they're dealing with. The church is a little old fashioned by its intentions are good. And finally, the ultimate insult, the old "religion and science are two sides of the same coin" trick. Die. DIE. Literally die right now ron howard. You have a responsibility to the audience not to be shit. There are young impressionable people watching this film and your taking a shit in their little minds. STOP SHITTING IN THE MINDS OF OUR CHILDREN RON HOWARD. STOP. Words cannot describe how terrible this film is. The Da Vinci Code was an acceptable film. It still licked christianity's ass but it was alright (largely thanks to Hans Zimmer, who i love more than my mother) I fail to see how at any stage they thought this would be good. Everything is wrong with it. Its boring. Its badly written. And worst of all, it is a whore. Actually, wait, thats an insult to whores, who quite frankly provide a valuable service. This film is a very poor whore who draws everyone in by pretending to be outrageous and contreversial and turns out to be an utter dissapointment with a fantastic soundtrack.

I found angels and demons to be some what of an anti climax, after watching the da vinci code i expected a lot more. As usual Tom Hanks gave a sterling performance to make the production a little more palatable, but what Tom made up for with talent the script took away with a blase unbeleivable account of the catholic church. Perhaps dan brown had taken into account the outrage the first film caused, but what unfolded was almost an interpretation of the catholic church. I did enjoy the film despite the short comings and found it entertaining, but dont think this film will win any oscars. A three star, a four star being very genourous. Look out for loose ends which dont tie up!

Tom Hanks is outstanding as usual; The story keeps you in suspense from start to end; clever twist how science meets religion, even though both are clearly exaggerated beyond realism it makes for a great story line and good entertainment. I have to admit what captured me most was the location. It makes you feel like you are walking through the streets of Rome yourself.

Do not listen to the reviews...this film is absolutely fabulous. If you've read the book first and understand what's going on, then I'm sure you're going to enjoy it. Dan Brown is a genius, and this film, though it goes off on a tangent from the book sometimes, truly shows that genius. Fab cast. 5*

Sean

A brilliant film that leaves you feeling like it was well worth the money. Ron Howard gets better each time he directs now, perhaps another Spielberg!

Great Movie, not quite with the book the whole way, but the important parts are there. Its nice that they kept the faults of the church in the movie as they were in the book, because religion is evil and should be exposed as such.

Really good clever film. Tom Kanks was amazing as expected and the story was admittedly slightly prefictable yet misleading with the twist right at the end which had me and a lot of others fooled! I dont think the start was particularly slow at all, you just need to be aware of whats going on. I wasnt too sure on the theme being included with religion as im not usually a fan but this was a gripping plot and i enjoyed it loads!

This film didnt get going for me. My gf said they missed parts out and the main killer wasnt as evil as he was in the book. It was a good film but that was it just good, stayed on one level throughout and didnt really get going for me, more of a dvd night in really

Before I say anything, I have to admit that I am not a fan of Tom Hanks, however even allowing for that... this is a fairly silly film, loads of cod religious philosophies that might appeal to conspiracy theorists but frankly doesn't stand up to any kind of analysis and lots of pointless... and fainly obvious... plot twists. Wouldn't say it was a total waste of money... Hanks hair has to be seen to be believed, but it was pretty close. Having said that if you liked the Da Vinci Code, this is much of the same and might appeal.

kelly

well ii personally liked the film, i wouldnt say it was a waste of money and i liked it so much im going to read the book [ and the davinci code] although, at times the plot was predictable at times ( but most films are like that ). its a film to watch ;]

Rick

Complete waste of time, thoroughly enjoyed the book, a shame I can't say the same about the film, too many changes and too much vital information ommited for my liking.

Bushytash

Well worth seeing for the roller coaster ride plot. Eye popping locations, and some exceptional sequences, especially with the helicopter. Faithful to the book.

alan

Don't waste your money! for once the critics got it spot on. a really pointless flim.

jaycee

Rushed and boring at the same time, and the villain is so predictable form about half way in

Fred

a wooden hanks on a weird tour of vatican in a mish mash of violent catholic vodoo and religious mumbo jumbo - even rome looks ugly and even piazza navona looks like a haunted ruin -vicious and wretched waste
