There’s a line from ‘Jurassic Park’ that echoed hauntingly through this critic’s head as ‘Avatar’ unfolded: ‘Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.’ James Cameron is one of those scientists: so in love with the technology, with the possibilities, that he never pauses to reflect upon the practicalities of cinema, of storytelling, of connecting with an audience.

That quote is doubly relevant when one considers the cultural similarities between these two blockbusters, both of which justified massive expense by promising a quantum leap forward in visual effects. But where Spielberg utilised technology in the service of a tight, witty script, Cameron is simply out to astound. There are moments when you almost expect Sam Worthington’s moody, ever-present voiceover to be replaced by the self-styled king of the world yelling at his audience: ‘Are you awestruck now? How about now? Now?’

When his scientist brother is killed a week before shipping out to the distant planet Pandora, wheelchair-bound US Marine Jake Sully (Worthington) is offered the chance to go in his place. On Pandora, Jake meets his avatar, a remote-controlled host body generated from his brother’s DNA and designed to blend in among the native Na’vi, a race of nine-foot blue hunter-gatherers living in peaceful harmony with their homeworld, Native American style.

Or rather, Native Californian: Na’vi civilisation is a mishmash of half-formed Hollywood ideas about the supposed superiority of ‘primitive’ cultures, tossing around buzzwords like ‘spirit’ and ‘energy’ without ever approaching a cohesive set of beliefs. But ‘all this tree-hugging shit’, as Jake describes it, is only the most obvious defect in Cameron’s dire, cliché-ridden script. From the bluntly expositional nature of the early scenes to the gung-ho, sub-‘Aliens’ banter of Jake’s fellow soldiers, this is screenwriting on autopilot, cobbling together unripe ideas without a scrap of originality or emotional resonance.

It’s hard to fault ‘Avatar’ as an immersive visual experience. Pandora and its luridly coloured inhabitants are beautifully designed, though none of this ever feels remotely real. But this was supposed to be the movie that changed the face of filmmaking forever. Ultimately, Cameron’s signature achievement may have been to prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the oldest of all Hollywood maxims: all the money in the world is no subsitute for fresh ideas and a solid script.

  • I'm so sick of the 5star lapdogs using the word 'entertainment' to suggest that anyone who didn't love Avatar don't know what the word means. en-ter-tain. (v) to hold the attention of pleasantly or agreeably; divert; amuse. Many people who need more than Disneyesque flying rocks, plot gaps, weakly drawn characters and the 3D equivalent of Ewoks to be sufficiently entertained, weren't. If Avatar is what you need to 'escape', then might I recommend something more visceral - like alcohol. And I find it interesting that most of the ad hominem attacks are coming from the 5Stars, not from those who either agree with the reviewer or at least appreciate the sentiments expressed and decided differently. Honestly.

  • How someone can rate this film as only two stars is beyond me. Surely the whole point of going to the cinema is to be entertained and entertainment this film has in spades. It's clear that there are a few pseudo intellectuals out there who try to look too deeply into everything. Mr and Mrs Average out there, like myself will be amazed by the film and enjoy it for what it is.........pure escapism.............and by anybodys standards, it's amazing!

  • Tom Huddleson from Timeout with his two star rating seems to have missed the whole point of this film. Its entertainment! To rate it two out of five is most baffling to me. At least in this story there is some moral message even if it is wrapped up in cliche' . Its an action movie yes, but its not mindless violence as in the film 'Wanted' or the ridiculous and moronic ' G.I Joe'. I appreciate and watch high end films but I also appreciate films of this genre when they are as professionally produced as this and I consider this to be one of the best. I think the public will vote with their feet on this one and word of mouth will ensure that it is a success.

  • First of all I have to take issue with the reviewer. Having just read your review of '2012' I find it incredulous that you awarded that movie 4 stars and Avatar only 2. Come on Tom, you have to be consistent but in this case have blatantly double standards. Using your yardstick of measure to be visuals for these two films you can't honestly tell me that Avatar's are not just superior but in a completely different league! So how can Avatar receive less stars than 2012? Look, I watched 2012 and enjoyed it because I expected that type of film. I wanted to see glorious special effects on a big screen but I'm glad to say that the average user ratings are more indicative of the worth of that particular film which I agree should have been 3 stars. Again the user ratings are a better guide for Avatar as well. I feel sorry for all those people who could not enjoy this film including Mr Huddlestone. You came to watch this film with an agenda of expectations which prevented you from sitting down, shutting up and just enjoying a truly remarkable cinematic experience. There are few people who can accomplish this and James Cameron is certainly one of them . To those 1 star reviews, the only people you are fooling are yourselves. There are very few films that deserve that indignation and Avatar certainly isn't one of them. So why are you so pissed off? Stop wasting your money at the cinema and stay home!

  • Brilliant. The story took a little while to get going but quickly became compelling and relevant. There are a few cliches and familiar stereotypes but i found this perfectly acceptable. Pandora is a genuinely interesting and well constructed world. The Naavi have a genuinely interesting and well thought out society. The message is perhaps simplistic but the film is executed so well that we are willing to suspend disbelief and roll with it. This for me is the joy of going to the movies. I dont want to see gritty realism. I want to be taken out of real life and plunged into a delusion where the guy gets the girl and innocence wins and the world is saved etc etc. Avatar does this supremely in such a way that it will have you screaming with exitement in your seats. The 3D really makes a difference in the fast paced action segments of the film and the last 40 minutes or so are utterly glorious. If you are the sort of person who is irritated by little spatterings of cliche pseudo profundities then you probably wont like this, but then if you are that sort of person you probably like very little. A film to be celebrated by all honest sane human beings. Masterpiece.

  • Seriously, every time i think i've read the most banal and idiotic comment imaginable on this review, someone like michael comes along to blow those preconceptions out of the water... if you really needed a movie like avatar to let you know that people are rubbish...

  • What i will say, is that as much as the film has been rated highly by everyone, whilst also being slated for it's story and dialogue. What people have failed to realise is the underlying problem here...the message it's sending... We, as humans, have NO respect for other lifeforms, creatures or animals. We are fuelled by greed and money and no one wants to listen to the scientists, the guys who know what their talking about. Either way, the film is amazing in every respect. Any film where an animated character can invoke emotion and bring out such sadness/happiness in you deserves a 6 star rating. It's worth seeing, it's not a silly sci-fi, it's ace and truly beautiful to watch. Michael

  • Ignore all of the comments from reviewers trying to make out that the Emperor has no clothes. I saw this film in 3D and thought it the best overall cinematic experience I have ever had. I will be going to see it again to take my extended family. I am 46 and a film buff with an extremely wide taste in films but this is still the best I have ever seen.

  • Was it not the great P.T. Barnum who said that no-one ever lost money by under-estimating the intelligence of the American (and we could add, in the UK, Americanized) public? No doubt Cameron will make his pile, the techies will gain oscars and the actors go home with their loot and nothing for their reputations. It is as meaningful as popcorn. Thank God for Time-Out's reviewer, who re-assures us that there are still some standards somewhere: it is an intelligent and incisive analysis that may finally help to save real film-making.
