There’s a line from ‘Jurassic Park’ that echoed hauntingly through this critic’s head as ‘Avatar’ unfolded: ‘Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.’ James Cameron is one of those scientists: so in love with the technology, with the possibilities, that he never pauses to reflect upon the practicalities of cinema, of storytelling, of connecting with an audience.

That quote is doubly relevant when one considers the cultural similarities between these two blockbusters, both of which justified massive expense by promising a quantum leap forward in visual effects. But where Spielberg utilised technology in the service of a tight, witty script, Cameron is simply out to astound. There are moments when you almost expect Sam Worthington’s moody, ever-present voiceover to be replaced by the self-styled king of the world yelling at his audience: ‘Are you awestruck now? How about now? Now?’

When his scientist brother is killed a week before shipping out to the distant planet Pandora, wheelchair-bound US Marine Jake Sully (Worthington) is offered the chance to go in his place. On Pandora, Jake meets his avatar, a remote-controlled host body generated from his brother’s DNA and designed to blend in among the native Na’vi, a race of nine-foot blue hunter-gatherers living in peaceful harmony with their homeworld, Native American style.

Or rather, Native Californian: Na’vi civilisation is a mishmash of half-formed Hollywood ideas about the supposed superiority of ‘primitive’ cultures, tossing around buzzwords like ‘spirit’ and ‘energy’ without ever approaching a cohesive set of beliefs. But ‘all this tree-hugging shit’, as Jake describes it, is only the most obvious defect in Cameron’s dire, cliché-ridden script. From the bluntly expositional nature of the early scenes to the gung-ho, sub-‘Aliens’ banter of Jake’s fellow soldiers, this is screenwriting on autopilot, cobbling together unripe ideas without a scrap of originality or emotional resonance.

It’s hard to fault ‘Avatar’ as an immersive visual experience. Pandora and its luridly coloured inhabitants are beautifully designed, though none of this ever feels remotely real. But this was supposed to be the movie that changed the face of filmmaking forever. Ultimately, Cameron’s signature achievement may have been to prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the oldest of all Hollywood maxims: all the money in the world is no subsitute for fresh ideas and a solid script.

  • loved it , was enthralled by the world created ....loved the simple 'baby' sully growing into a titan of a man a leader ,,,the idea of him running free in his new avatar body the release from his wheelchair life an interesting one .... implications for the future 'second life '? loved it came out filled with energy and visually stimulated ...the cheesy heavy handed script could almost be said to be humorous ...?

  • Jim A.K.A Colonel Miles Quaritch Posted on Dec 29 2009 14:29 Judging from the comments below, there are clearly many people who like the movie Avatar. There are many giddy gushings like "best movie eveeeeeer" "unbelievably believable" "one of my best ever films!!!!!" "u HAVE to see it!!!!!!!!!!" etc. etc. What you don't find, however, is any explanation of what these people like about the movie. This is not a coincidence. The reason why these people don't tell us why they like this movie is because they don't themselves actually even know. They are Na'vi you see. And the signal characteristics of a Na'vi are an utter lack of introspection, and the inability to formulate, let alone express, a coherent original thought. If these people could actually tell us why they like the movie, they wouldn't be Na'vi . But then, alas, they wouldn't like this movie in the first place. So it is all a bit hopeless. Kind of like expecting a dog to explain why it likes shoving its snout in other dogs' rears. You might get some energetic wagging (the dog-equivalent of lots of !!!!!'s) but don't count on much more. Fixed

  • This is in reply to jim. What did i like about the film? Where to begin? As i have already said in a previous review, the film was cheesy, cliche ridden, full of stereotypes, and for the most part poorly scripted. However, it was also brilliant. The story was engaging. I cared about what happened to the characters and found their relationships interesting. I thought the movie was fast paced and well edited. I liked the music very much. I found both pandora and the na'vi culture enthralling and believable. I'm a sucker for fantasy and enjoy being immersed in new worlds. The special effects were utterlly glorious and like nothing i have seen before. Most importantly of all, i enjoyed it immensely. It made me feel angry, sad and elated. It made me gasp and laugh and shout. And as i stated previously: We get it. You are fairly intelligent. You can form coherent snobby oh so witty opinions about the film. But we know something you dont. We know that there's something more important than that. Having a laugh. You aren't the cultural elite. Half the people posting could be just as snobbish as you but they've surpassed you. They're too busy enjoying themselves. Jim, you are an insufferable, self important, impenetrable fool and i think i speak for 99% of the public when i say i hope you can pull your head out of your own ass for long enough to kill yourself. Buhbye!

  • Was hoping for more I knew my expectations would be thwarted. Nice film but really wanted something more, not story lines or themes I have seen before. I thought because he was writing this for 10 years he would come out with a new genre, like the Matrix did with its storyline.....hopefully someone who sees this will be inspired to create what was missing from this film, but as I said it was nice.

  • Boring, predictable, artificial, far too long - after about an hour in the cinema I wished I had brought along my knitting to help me pass the time...

  • Don't listen to the critics - go along sit back and immerse yourself in a most spectacular cinema experience . There is plenty of imagination and intelligence to the plot and science so I don't know what the negative comments are all about - This is entertainment after all
