It’s official: April 2012 will forever be known as Joss Whedon month. Not content with co-writing and producing the best film of the year so far, the berserk horror romp ‘The Cabin in the Woods’, he’s now scripted and directed its biggest. And if ‘Avengers Assemble’ doesn’t feel quite as irreducibly Whedon-esque as ‘Cabin’, it retains enough of his trademark off-kilter wit and attention to character to set it high above your average multiplex crowd-pleaser.

For those unfamiliar with the Marvel canon, the Avengers comics unite superheroes from across the company’s roster, in this case – deep breath – Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), The Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and lesser-known caped crusaders Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). Brought together by Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) and his SHIELD organisation, these six ass-kicking egomaniacs are tasked with taking on Loki (Tom Hiddleston), who plans to flood the world with evil skeleton monsters from outer space.

It’s not rare to see a blockbuster skimp on plot, but that tendency is taken to new extremes here: the story is just a bare frame on which Whedon hangs his characters and action sequences. This can lead to problems when we realise that, Loki aside, we don’t know who the bad guys are, where they come from or what they want.

But that – and a handful of dodgy CGI effects – is the only major fault with ‘Avengers Assemble’. This is as close as cinema gets to a fairground ride: it’s shiny, noisy and exhilarating. Whedon directs with a sledgehammer, bashing the audience, Hulk-like, with action piled upon action, explosion after explosion. And if it can, at times, seem a little busy, the cumulative effect is thrilling.

But it’s no surprise that Whedon’s true strength is as a writer. Marshalling six heroes – and at least as many other key speaking roles – he delineates characters beautifully, keeping the macho-bullshit quotient high (Downey Jr and Hemsworth are good value in this department) while also allowing for a few quieter, sweeter touches, most of them courtesy of Ruffalo’s battered and defensive Hulk.

And in another break from the blockbuster norm, he manages to get the villain spot on, handing Hiddleston a gift of a role as Loki, and one of the most memorably nasty insults in recent screen history.

‘Avengers Assemble’ may not be the Joss Whedon movie everyone remembers in 2012, but it does offer this hugely talented writer-director – too long confined to TV and the web – the opportunity (and the budget) to show what he’s capable of.

"The Avengers" is an absolute masterpiece, i absolutely loved it. It hits all the right notes in my opinion, great action sequences, superb acting performances, Outstanding special effects and some very slick comic relief. This is everything a comic book movie should be and more. Simply stated, "The Avengers" is just a flat out great film period.

I watched this film not so long ago and I thought it was brilliant! I found it exciting to watch how the characters eventually got along together and the action in the story was also great! The effects and graphics are outstanding and I truly believe that it's definately worth a watch! I don't think that some of these ratings truly gives the film the credit it deserves!

A fairly average plot, a bit of a slow burner but contains some decent action scenes and it is always nice to see the marvel charecters work around their conflicting personalties and defy the odds to save the world. Definately worth a watch. 7.5 \ 10

"Rather see a peace statement by Jon Turner who is an ex US marine from Iraq then this or any other US pro-militaristic trash. " Or, Ewelyn, you could try watching the movie and thinking for yourself, rather than following a simplistic, knee-jerk line provided by others.

"I failed to mention the disturbing hegemonic 'All-American-flag-waving-Pro-militaty-industrial-complex' feel..." I think this is a bit kneee-jerk. It was at least partly critical of the "militaty-industrial-complex" - note the Avengers are not supportive of SHIELD's actions re-weapons development. Also, the position of Earth in this film is NOT one of a hegemonic power. In the universe portrayed in the narrative of the Avengers we aren't the hegemonic power, we're the ones desperately trying to develop weapons and systems to send a message to the more powerful forces in the rest of the universe. In this movie Earth's position isn't analogous to that of the USA's; it is more analogous to North Korea's.

OK, shoot'emup, no real acting to be done by anyone, super CGI, few funny lines, overlong, good for a wet Tuesday but it aint art.

Goodness! This movie is kicking off some strong reactions. I really enjoyed it and - even though I agree with those people who say there are American military plots here, that's true of many, many worse movies. I think it's really worth seeing in 3D as the effects leap out more effectively. But I have loved Marvel comics since childhood and I found a great deal that was very satisfying here. Yes, I am female but I still love action films and this has LOADS of action.

Good fun! I liked it! but not quite up to the mark of the Iron Man films.. and I confess to even preferring the pure silliness of THOR! A rambling storyline, too many characters, and at times the CGI has the effect of an exploding toy box(!), but I was entertained. Go check out 'HULK V THOR' to see how BRILLIANT this movie could have been!! ;o] (with a stronger plot!)

JayneM, I’d say don’t bother with 3D then, if you haven’t previously been a fan. I preferred the 2D version. The 3D only adds a little to some of the battle at the end. The extra cost and the annoyance of the glasses aren’t worth it. Violet tea, If you think it’s not a patch on Independence Day, there goes your credibility right there. (Predator is a good film, though, I’ll grant you.)

Half the film is an assemblage of stuff from the cutting room for some other movies involving the Avengers or so it seems. Not a patch on Independence Day or Predator for example - and the flying aircraft carrier did squat in the final battle - but thank Zeus aliens are so easy to kill - our bow and arrows really showed them what technology is all about. Empty headed and boring - don't bother.

mike wrote: "Certainly not one for the girls, very few in the audience....." I saw it twice, once in 2D, and the audience split was fairly even. Also, IMDb ratings suggest females rate it about as highly as males.

Just another army fantasy in which they justify the fact that they have infinite amounts of money on their disposal to make invisible flying aircraft carriers and finally all that eavesdropping on moblie phones payed off because they located the bad guys so in the sequel they'll explain how those flying drones that they plan to release all over US to spy on people actually help them. I mean it's not that they are exaggerating with all that weapon production and surveillance technology it's that the bad guys are being so sophisticated every day that you need invisible flying aircraft carriers just to keep the pace with them.

scrumpyjack

Second viewing, second time I'll say (as a non-comic book fan) a stunning achievement. 8+/10

I always find that the earliest summer blockbusters are usually the best and Avengers (so far!) manages to stay true to that theory. To put it simply, I really enjoyed it - it was funny and action packed and all of the characters had great entrances or cool scenes. The Hulk has always been my favourite and here he is given some of the best scenes and lines that any comic character has had on the big screen. For me, Ruffalo brings the most 'human' element to the film (which is ironic given that his alter-ego is a big green monster). Of the Marvel comic films, I'd say Avengers Assemble is up there with the first Iron Man and light years ahead of the dismal Captain America (which I really wanted to like) and the so-so Thor (which wasn't as bad as I thought it would be).

entertaining

Enjoyed this, but have to agree that the baddies (apart from Loki) are a bit faceless and we don't really get an indication of what their point is, other than 'kill all humans'. I had a bit of a problem with how powerful the Hulk was portrayed to be - I thought he was meant to just be extremely strong - but here, he's leaping around all oer the place, at high speed, and is apparently stronger than a GOD ?!?! Apart from this, there's quite a lot of genuine humour here, and of course Tom Hiddleston steals the show - he's almost too charismatic, as often you're sort of rooting for him.

Jamil

This is an outstanding movie with fantastic cgi and strong super hero character depth and well developed together throughout this film. The acting was strong by all the cast and between this and the non stop action, comedy, interscene heightening of thrill and suspense, this makes up for the somewhat weak plot in places.

I'm actually relieved to find comments that concur with my experience of the film. Who cares if the characters are funny or well developed when there is no plot? I was bored beyond belief throughout the heli base part of the film and when we finally got the pat off, the protracted third act was one big massive CGI mess that couldn't be cared about no matter how hard I tried. Such a shame because Whedon is a massive talent and the character material he had to work with is rich but I'm sorry - I do not understand all the positive reviews. I couldn't even face watching it again to perhaps reevaluate. 2 stars out of 5 only because there were a few funny parts.

mike

ooohhhh..... and guys and girls DON'T BELIEVE those reviews that give this movie 5 starts, these people are obviously paid to do this.

mike

Certainly not one for the girls, very few in the audience.....my girlfriend fell asleep after a totally boring first 30 minutes. The story is non-existant. And the action is totally pointless...... goodies all indestructible......... so pointless.... If you arrive 30 minutes late for the start don't worry you won't have missed a thing. I would like to say that this is one for the kids, but I cannot since it is so bad. I am now absolutely fed up with computer generated special effects of the American's yet again saving the World. During the action it felt like I was watching someone play a computer game with the setting on indestructible.

Robert

Fast paced, action packed , good 3D. It helps to have seen the individual heroes in their own films to have a feel for who they are, as there's so much going on here that character development gets squeezed out. But great fun.

Ian

Reading the above reviews I must have been missing something. The film looks good and yes there is some real humour in the film but the problem is that there is little in the way of plot. To me it seems just like an opportunity to show off what can now be done with cgi and 3d. There is the obligatory teaser for the next film at the end of the credits so so far so normal. Its good but not great worth a visit but not as good as the other reviews say. A good 3 stars but not worth 4.
