Ballet Boys

This Norwegian doc follows three teenage boys in Oslo over four years as they grapple with their dreams of becoming ballet dancers. Syvert is from an Asian family and is as mixed up about his ethnicity as he is about becoming a dancer; Torgeir is spotty, blond and looks like a mini-me Viking; Lukas is the handsome one, and he’s mulling over whether to pursue his craft at London’s Royal Ballet School. They’re all charm personified, and Kenneth Elvebakk’s film is stylish and amiable. But at 75 minutes it’s too brisk and feels like a TV series edited down to the bare minimum, with questions left hanging. What’s most appealing about ‘Ballet Boys’ is the insight it gives into the bond between these three, and the threats to their friendship that emerge when life suggests different paths for each of them.
