Time Out says

Perhaps not one of Hawks' greatest films, but none the less interesting. Set in the isolating fog and mist that immediately removes turn-of-the-century San Francisco from time and space, it deals with the competition between nightclub owner Robinson and prospector McCrea for Miriam Hopkins' dancer. Though the Hecht-MacArthur script is surprisingly poetic and derring-do, Hawks' direction is typically matter-of-fact.
