Bitter Rice

Film

Time Out says

Intended as a hard-hitting social critique of the exploitation of rice-field workers in the Po Valley, this was much criticised at the time for compromising its neo-realism by sugaring the bleak message with some souped-up sex and violence. Actually it all seems very mild now, but De Santis' bold camera style and superb handling of crowd movement are well worth a look.
