Time Out says

An amiable adaptation of the classic kids' novel by Leon Garfield, which tells the adventures of a boy on the road in brutal, colourful 1750s England. Loach shoots the film with characteristic sensitivity (and scrupulous period realism), but his unwillingness to face the challenges of social history, and his failure to capture the magical spirit of the novel, let him down.
