Time Out says

A strikingly designed Victorian melodrama, produced by Cineguild, which had made David Lean's two Dickens adaptations and was now trying to get into the Gainsborough market. Hobson plays a poor-relation governess who marries a widowed cousin and falls in love with Granger, a bastard who believes he has been disinherited. What makes the film rather distinctive is its eagerness to kill off the cast, whose acting is too lightweight for the material.
