Calloused hands: Director Quinones tells us that the film is 70% based on his life. This makes the watch painful at times. An abusive bum of a boyfriend (Royo-The Wire) goes from bad to worse, but mother (Haggard) is not able to send him away. Her father is only willing to give financial help on the condition that her son, a promising baseball player, Josh (Oriel) does his Bar mitzvah. The symbolism in the film is sometimes a little too present, Josh's shirt being number 13 and mother walking around with a big star of David around her neck (a continuity mistake noticeable at one point). We follow various characters, therefore not everything gets explored in depth, but what makes it stand out is Royo's capability to give the bad guy proper depth. Also Oriel, the teenage actor deserves a mention. Only shame is that the ending felt contrived....
