With about as much reliable insight into the human condition as a stack of old ‘Dear Deirdre…’ columns, ‘City Rats’ haphazardly tails a pack of tenuously linked London down-and-outs as they soul-search, emote and swear their way across the capital. It’s a terrible film, so blithely wrong-headed in its execution that some scenes are quite  entertaining in an ‘is this really happening?’ kind of way. Take, for instance, the bit where shame-faced gay party boy Olly (Kenny Doughty) is looking after his autistic, deaf, dumb and latently homosexual brother Chris (James Lance) for the evening. Leading him through Soho, Olly picks up a rent boy and then – for reasons unknown – demands that he sit in as his deaf, dumb and latently homosexual brother is stripped of his virginity. The performances are mostly of the frenzied, soap-opera sort, save for Susan Lynch, who is likeable as a sass-talking ‘crippled whore’.

I watched this effort at film-making trying desperately to find a way of relating to a collection of characters, none of whom bore the slightest ressemblance to anyone I have come across in real life. The word `depressing` doesn't really do justice to the dark weidness of this film . . Surely it is the jobs of films to inspire, .. to entertain . . .. to reveal truths . . . to present an aesthetic vision ; . . . to do something anyway . . .. Best thing about the film was the music . . . which had no real connection with the on-screen misery, but in some undefinable way, made this indulgent, pretentious piece of cinema palatable.

I wasn't expecting this film to be such a great film.it tells us what do we really want in life and what we chose in our life.I recommend this movie for those who have deep phylosophical thinking.

This film WILL BE a cult classic!!! I have no doubt about that. A great film for the educated viewer.

No one film can appeal to everyone. City Rats has been a commercial success soon to go to Germany and the US. The films investors have made a very healthy tax free return so I think that speaks volmes when some Hollywood major films have flopped and made no money. City Rats success had directly led to more films being financed which means more investment into the economy and the British film industry and of course more jobs.

As said by others before a movie which doesn't adhere to the usual Hollywood format. Smacks a bit of Naked by Mike Leigh.Definately misleading in the advertising as the characters hardly 'collided' with one another. A slow drama for sure NOT a gangster style movie whatsoever. Thought the critics comments harsh but he sounds Welsh so they don't have a lot to be happy about the best of times.

Sam

An interesting concept, great cast and well produced. A little scetchy in places but a gripping and unusual must see. Its like marmite... you love it or hate it.

One thing that should be pointed out is that City Rats has been a commercial success having recouped in 2 quarters making a serious tax free return for investors. As a low budget independent British film it has carved a new path and made people look at UK films with the right framework as a real investment alternative.

jimmy

totally fuckin awfull wtf is that scene with the fat mans arse about? terrible

Nick

Never gripped me... Depressing, slow moving and BADLY misrepresented by promoters. Spent the whole film waiting for (as it says on the back of the DVD) the eight characters lives to "collide in a pulp fiction style blend." but was sadly disappointed. Best moment was the end when Kenny Doughty and Danny Dyer almost meet.

Lewis

Quite possibly the worst film I have ever seen! Nothing artistic or thought-provoking about it...utter rubbish.

darren

Seriously are you people watching the same thing? City rats is THE worst film I've ever had the mis-fortune to pay for. I's a complete con and Dyer should be ashamed of this guff. It's portrayed as a Dyer/Hasan gangster flick, when that couldn't be further from the truth. They don't even share a scene in this mushy, freaky, trying to be too dark and indy for its own good pile of complete and utter nonsense. A deaf, gay retard, what is that all about? A crippled prostitute and a guy that enjoys masturbating while painting. Do not waste your time with this tripe, I paid £9 for it and i'm still not over the crassness of the film. Horrible Horrible Horrible!

John

What is Jenkins talking about. The film is fantastic. A thought provoking experience. A million miles from the usual big bang computer generated rubbish out there. I LOVED IT!

The is an intelligent well crafted film at times funny and at times moving. Unfortunately some of the audences expected a shoot `em up and have no patience to watch the threads come apart or together as the film unfolds. This has the possibiltiies to be a cult movie.

JENKINS you clearly do not realise that actors can diverse from their typicalroles, the film was fantastic and the acting was top notch! i dont understand why this great film is being reviewd so negitively, the only reason i can think of it that it was advertised as a 'business' type film, but was not, and that was the fault of 'Revolver' not the director/writer/actors!

What is Jenkins on about? I think he protests too much, it was great to see Dyer and Hassan step out of their 'Business' type roles. it was meant to be a dark and emotionally depressing film. Technically, brilliantly shot with dramatic scenes. Love the film. See it for yourself, the critics have got it wrong!!!!

Serina

City Rats was a beautifully shot film, especially since it was shot on a low budget. High praises to the director, Steve Kelly. The stroylines were very dark and true to life depressing. All eight stories were unique, with some cleverly intertwined. It was great to see Dyer and Hussan playing different characters to their norm. Fab film, fab cast, FAB overall.

Richard

I must disagree witht the review of CITY RATS, the film is emotional and moving. the comment about the 'Dear Deirdre...' columns is somewhat harsh as it is, after all a film feature that was not intended to mirror the real life of the majority!
