It’s possible to make a good film from mediocre material, but it’s an uphill battle. Alex Garland’s script for this return to Mega City One is lazy and derivative: the characters are slight and the twists unconvincing, while a presumably accidental but highly conspicuous similarity to the plot of this year’s ‘The Raid’ robs it of any sense of surprise. So respect is due to director Pete Travis, who from these humble beginnings has fashioned a dynamic, entertaining and visually sensational action romp.

Karl Urban plays Judge Dredd, a fascistic future cop with the right to try and execute wrongdoers on the spot. When he discovers that scarred supervillain Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) is responsible for the production of a deadly new narcotic, Slo-Mo, Dredd tools up and goes hunting. The film has clearly been made on a tighter budget than your average Hollywood shoot-’em-up, but Travis makes the most of limited resources: the industrial backdrops are stunning, the action scenes sizzle and the eye-of-the-addict Slo-Mo sequences are sickeningly beautiful. A shame, then, that the script consistently falls so flat.

  • Great Adult action romp, how it should be, liked the slow mo scenes, not that original name for the drug in the movie but it was cool, and the bad ass woman gang leader was convinicingly very disturbed and scary, didnt say that much though her looks were enough. The judges were convincingly fascistic, but i agree, the comic' depiction of the jusges was more satirical, This was not an outstanding movie, plot could have been better but it was enjoyable. dark and sadistic which is what the movie needed, and went at the right tempo: mucnb btter than the stallon version whcih was totally crap!!

  • Well, I don't know what film most of you were watching, but it clearly wasn't this one as this was an excellent rendition of the character of Judge Dredd. Karl Urban gets full marks for playing the character so well. The only niggle that I have with this is that it wasn't shown in enough cinemas in 2D. But that doesn't effect my final score of it. I'll look forward to getting this on DVD when it's released :)

  • Entertaining enough.I would agree though the script was a bit flat and the tongue in cheek tone from the Stallone movies was lacking. But still enjoyable.Probably one for the big screen as well.

  • Megacity One does look great, but that’s all I can say in favour of this. It’s as if someone thought, ‘Gouts of blood in slow motion and 3-D would look really cool; let’s make a film around that.’ This plays far too much to the 3-D, which looks artificial, in places horribly cluttered and distracting, and at one point makes one of the characters (Judge Dredd himself, I believe) look as though they’ve shrunk. I’m no wimp when it comes to gore, but there’s a nasty sadistic streak in here too. There’s also precious little plot. My friend and I saw this and ‘Total Recall’ together on following days; I must admit my friend loved both films, but I thought that ‘Total Recall’ was far superior. Ironically I think I’d have enjoyed this a lot more in 2-D.

  • olivia thirby as the psychic is remarkable and the visual depth the 3D attains in the drugged portions becomes almost a dream come true at times ,one can comprehend why the drug would be so powerful in reality ,this is a worthy remake of all the remakes recently , because it does not treat source material as derivative but rejuvenates it and thus it keeps you engaged without karl urban ever removing his helmet ,a must for the comic book fans but others will find it equally haunting for both the psychic dynamics and the slo mo definition which is breath takingly stupendous .and the violence is equally sickening but nightmarishly real in affect which gives it a psychological tone lacking in most movies today-entertaining even if flawed

  • I'll compare it to my THE RAID comments........it's good but, in respect of repetiveness, hits the buffers an hour or so in. The finest 3D in an action film, it must be said. PS, were there drugs being manufactured at the Nakitomi Plaza? Missed that! 7/10
