Presley made 33 films, and at least 30 were considered duds by the critics. However, they all made money, and they're still a fixture on TV. Here, he's a homeless army veteran who heads south to Florida with his father and four orphans (songs include 'Home Is Where the Heart Is'). Opportunities for sneering and hip-swivelling are limited. One of Hollywood's most celebrated (and cynical) screenwriters, Charles Lederer, provided the script (from the novel Pioneer Go Home by Richard Powell), but it's such a feeble, mawkish affair that you half suspect he wrote it tongue-in-cheek. Or perhaps he thought Perry Como was the star.
