Clooney’s moody B&W account of the efforts of the mid-’50s CBS news show ‘See It Now’ to criticise the McCarthyite purges. Straithairn is superb as straight-backed, chain-smoking anchorman Murrow, while McCarthy stars in newsreel footage. Smoke and jazz hang in the air. The mood is serious but never overly grave, and it’s hard not to equate McCarthy’s paranoid rants with the current President’s obsessions (as is surely Clooney’s aim).Author: DC
