A tedious disaster movie that amounts to no more than a straightforward salvage operation (the film is plastered with dedications to the US Navy). Heston, strong and silent commander of the jeopardised nuclear sub that sinks after a collision, is given lines which strain credulity even more than his hairpiece: 'Stow that crap, sailor, now!' Character makes little impression in this almost entirely pointless military exercise. David Carradine at least makes some impact as the strong, silent, nonconformist captain who mounts the rescue operation, but everyone else is more mechanical than the hardware.
