‘I’d rather be a good nobody than an evil somebody’ is the mantra for this undistinguished animated Frankenstein comedy spin-off. Igor is one of many identical-looking hunchbacks who aid the kingdom of Malaria’s evil scientists with their wicked inventions. Igor (voiced by John Cusack) has a face like Peter Lorre and a demeanour far removed from his master, Dr Glickenstein (John Cleese). He’s also more intelligent than his fellow hunchbacks.

So, when Glickenstein accidentally expires, Igor sets out to prove his worth by inventing the most monstrous of all monsters in Eva. However, Eva turns out to be more caring and thoughtful than destructive, and eventually persuades Igor that more comes out of being good than being bad. The animation here is vaguely Tim Burton-esque with a nod to Ralph Steadman in some of the outlandish characters, especially that of Eddie Izzard’s key villain, Dr Schadenfreude. But there’s not much form to the plot which develops in fits and starts. Nevertheless, those kids that weren’t confused appeared to enjoy it, so there you go.

  • Slow to start bu then, what a fantastic film. I went to it with my wife and two children (aged 3 and 6). The dialogue was in places predictable, but the delivery was heart-warming. The concept behind the entire film is just...."weird", but that is what makes it so original. There are gags that make you literally gag and others that had me laughing out loud. The voices are familiar, which actually irritated me until I could put a name to them. But overall this film was superb, not visually mind-blowing, not philosophically challenging and not emotionally draining. I loved it, my wife loved it and my kids loved it.

  • I loved this film. I'm 16, and I absolutly loved it. Some of the jokes in it were funnier than this review has given it credit for, and although admittadly the story was slow to get going, it made up for it during the rest of the film.
