Maybe it’s all the couch-jumping and tabloid weirdness, or maybe it’s his outrageous appearances in ‘Tropic Thunder’ and ‘Rock of Ages’, but it’s becoming difficult to take Tom Cruise seriously. Which is fine when he’s keeping it fairly light. But as Jack Reacher – the hero of Lee Childs’s hugely popular thriller series – he’s called upon to growl, grunt and gun guys down in cold blood. And it’s hard not to laugh.

An ex-US Army drifter who uses his superhuman fighting skills and vast intellect to help the needy, Reacher is a kind of a one-man A-Team. His mission is to investigate the case of James Mark Barr, a military sniper accused of picking off five ordinary people in Pittsburgh. But although the case against Barr seems watertight, Reacher has his suspicions, and it all leads – rather wonderfully – to Werner Herzog in funny-coloured contact lenses.

It’s hard to tell in what spirit we should receive writer-director Christopher McQuarrie’s film – Herzog’s scenery-chewing turn and most of Cruise’s laughably macho dialogue suggest pastiche, but an air of gritty, post-Bush bleakness and some brutal, bone-snapping violence make for an odd tonal balance. The result is an average, action-heavy detective story which walks a fine line between the compelling and comical.

Not really very good for a number of reasons. Firstly, the casting of Cruise as Reacher is immediately flawed. Not only in height, but hair colour, build and charisma. Cruise is just playing Cruise…there’s not differentiation between this character and Ethan Hunt, for example. Just think of Hunt as a drifter. Secondly, the chemistry between Cruise and Rosamund Pike is laughable. She’s pretty hammy, too. She just seems to open her eyes wider if she’s trying to look concerned. The villains are pretty lame, and Werner Herzog sounds like he’s doing an Arnie impression…ironic given that’s how he really speaks! The action scenes were ok, if a bit vacant, the plot twists were predictable and the typically brilliant Robert Duvall – who is always watchable – is simply playing for laughs in a role you feel is far more fleshed out in the novel. I’m confused as to why they chose the 9th Reacher book to film as well. In my view, the Reacher novels would by far suit an HBO series. Still, far better than the other recent Cruise disaster that was ‘Oblivion’. That was atrocious.

Totally miss-cast! Ruined the whole movie. Reacher is Reacher and part of Reacher is his size. Are there no big physical actors anymore? Lee should have never allowed it. Guess he sold out for a name actor.

Entertaining thriller. Haven`t read the books so no axe to grind about Cruise`s casting. Jumping on my own high horse for a minute, however, surely this should have been certificated 15 for its many scenes of violence?

Good film. You do not go to sleep watching this film!! T C was good. So was the script. Less real for me was the man from Siberia.I had a great time and advise people to go see it.

We really enjoyed this film and found Tom Cruise very believable though we had not read the books. His co-star was not as good as she is in other films but her US accent did not grate at all which is an achievement. The time flew and we exited the cinema happy. We haven't read the Lee Childs books and maybe that helps but I'll certainly try the books now.

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher????!!! WTF! The reviewer has it summed up correctly in the first paragraph. In any future Jack Reacher movies pick some one else to play him!

TRUTHTELLER.

P.S. The career of Tom Crusise has been sliding lately and it looks as if he's claiming Jack Reacher as his new franchise. I hope not. I hope that someone else plays Jack Reacher in the next film otherwise Lee Child is going to face the same fate as the great Elmore Leonard. Cast someone else next time.

TRUTHTELLER.

Talk about miscasting! Tom Cruise as 6ft 5inch, tough as nails, macho, Jack Reacher?! LMAO! That boggles the mind. The books by Lee Child are great and Cruise just can't live up to what Jack Reacher should be. However, if you never read one of the books and don't know who Jack Reacher is then this is a pretty good movie.

I've read all the books by Lee Child who is a very brilliant writer. However Tom Cruise didn't quite meet my expectation of what Jack Reacher would be like. Having said that, it probably is very hard to step into the shoes of a character who has been in 17 novels so far. The film did stay true to the book and was very well done with plenty of action - something which Tom Cruise is extremely good at. One thing I noticed was that everyone had perfect white teeth, even the old man who'd been in Siberia? Hmmm By the way anyone notice the very cute desk sergeant??? :)

Yep, "Jack Reacher" was definitely worth the visit, and it generally stuck with the book. Besides, when the man kicked the door on the big screen it looked better. The size issue didn't matter, except when he "tackled" a giant, but Mr C did okay by me and the dialogue was close enough to Reacher too. Apparently the reading group at my library (all Reacher fans), didn't take too kindly to Mr C playing their hero - but then they probably didn't go see the movie, and that's their loss. Thumbs up with hopes for more...

Not interested in what J.P fans comment abt this & as im not one i didnt look at silly things like the fact his height was a issue or casting a boy-yeah very funny Rand miller! Ive seen a 5foot chinese man beat up a guy that looked like sloth outa the goonies on a night out. Moving on to the movie i thought it was abit lackluster in the action front .i wanted more but Tom cruise played the part well. The plot was moving but at least in the right direction & and was good to see cruise & duvall team up again on the big screen.a worthy trip to the cinema! 3.5 star

I have not read the books so leaving aside whether he measures up to the role physically I came to this with no prior knowledge of the books. I agree virtually word for word with Archgate's review. It was much better than I expected and is well worth a visit to your local cinema to see it. If the rest of the books are up to this standard I might go out and buy some. An excellent action film and definitely Cruise's best film for a long while. Solid four stars.

ARCHGATE

Very entertaining and easy on the eye. Possibly Cruise's best action performance played straight down the line in this 12A certificated film. The story has a book-like linear style in it's story telling which holds the attention throughout. His height is not an issue, if a 6ft 5 dude can take on 5 dudes - so can a pumped up 5ft 7 dude. There is a rattling good car chase, a tasty reverse kick fight.... and a nod to more films to follow. Buy a ticket, sit your backside down without popcorn and mobile phone and enjoy yourself. P.S, Cineworld cinemas have mice - small and seemingly very tough.

Its not a bad film , true he's not as big as the character should have been , but it's a better film then sky fall

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. Yours is clearly the minority as I have been reading most great reviews for this movie- based not on personal attacks (like you), but on the quality of filmmaking (my preference).
