Not quite Rider Haggard's ripping adventure, given that Robeson's Umbopo is required to sing (singularly soggy stuff, too, with full orchestral accompaniment) and a soppily conventional love interest has been injected. But there are two fine performances (Hardwicke as Allan Quartermain, Young as Captain Good), Stevenson keeps things moving quite briskly to the volcanic climax, and it's a damn sight better than the 1985 remake (or the 1950 Stewart Granger version for that matter).
