In 2004, the film ‘Sex Lives of the Potato Men’ caused an outcry: a celebration of puerile schoolboy humour, it became a rallying cry for those concerned with the plummeting standards of British film comedy. It seems unbelievable that those standards could sink any lower, but next to ‘Lesbian Vampire Killers’ – ‘Gavin and Stacey’ stars James Corden and Mat Horne’s movie debut – ‘Potato Men’ was a work of rapier-like wit and Switftian subtlety.

The plot is simple: dumped by his devious on-off girlfriend Judy, hapless schlub Jimmy (Horne) drags his mate Fletch (Corden) on a trip to darkest Norfolk. It’s not long before they run into trouble with the locals: an ancient clan of girl-hungry nightwalkers.

On one level, ‘Lesbian Vampire Killers’ is just pitiful playground humour that assumes that face-pulling, swearing and the occasional flash of boob will compensate for a complete absence of actual jokes. But on another, far more worrying level, it’s the cruel and furtive revenge fantasy of two scorned adolescent nerds against the entire female gender. The women in the film are, almost without exception, manipulative, sexually voracious, man-hating monsters, and it’s hard not to feel queasy as they are dispatched in a number of unimaginative , brutal ways.

Clearly aware of its own artistic shortcomings, ‘Lesbian Vampire Killers’ is aimed squarely at the ‘so bad it’s good’ camp. But with its drab sitcom aesthetic, a script that might have been jotted on the back of a beer mat and a plot that feels overstretched at 86 minutes, this is so bad, it’s just bad.

I'm giving it 5 out of 5 simply because the critics panned it so viciously. I saw it thinking it was going to be literally unwatchable, but it was a fairly robust little teen flick. Which is exactly what it was supposed to be. Not every British Horror comedy will be as good as Shaun of the dead, but that doesn't mean it should be slated. I think there was a media agenda against Corden and Horne, maybe due to over exposure. I really don't know, as the film was very harshly reviewed given it's aimed at a young, puerile crowd. Who apparently seemed to love it.

To the feminist-appeasing critics crawling around with rods up their backsides who have panned this movie:- get over yourselves already! This unpretentious and consciously silly film had me grinning from beginning to end and laughing at its many moments of hilarity. Only two of the characters remain admirable throughout the film, and the more admirable of those is a woman. The premise is weak, some of the dialogue is beyond bad, the twists and turns of the plot are fairly predictable and a few of the jokes miss their mark - especially some of the visual ones. Even so, this is a genuinely funny comedy, not in the same league as Hot Fuzz, but far, far better than the abysmal Shaun of the Dead. If you're at a loose end, you could do far worse than watch this with your mates. But don't bring your girlfriend. Or you won't be getting any for a week. Don't say I didn't warn you!!!

Who let Lady Engineer out of the kitchen? Engineer indeed... bet you don't know what a 3 planed splifter is? The film was magically fantastic, absolutely wonderful, great in bits and not so in others, could have been a bit better, maybe not so good at all, pile of cack, absolute crap...booo.

The media student in me was sat cringing through a lot of the film. So was the rest of me. That isn't to say this film isn't worth watching though! It's not a masterpiece, or a film that will be written about for decades to come, but it is most definitely entertaining. If you're not a film snob, or overly sensitive, it's worth watching.

I went to watch this film last Sunday with two girlfriends and we loved it! Laughed so much! I didn't think it was offensive towards women or lesbians. Quite the opposite - I laughed at the men and their inabilities to communicate with women and express their emotions. Horne and Corden are great and they delivered what we expected. It's true that it's not the deepest of films, but a great Sunday afternoon light entertainment!

If you liket eh idea of lesbians being "cured" (killed) by straight men that want vengeance for being dumped etc ( think of what happened in Germany a few weeks back) and you only likegay women that are appealing to men and think it's fine for women to be treated as objects as usual, then fine, go and see it and compound the idea that it's ok to treat women like this.

It's actually very funny if you go to see it with a light heart and not overly high expectations. But definitely you have to see it to make your own mind up rather than assuming it's bad because it is not on many levels. For Horne and Corden and McGann fans, and all those who enjoyed Ed Wood. GO TO SEE IT BEFORE YOU ASSUME ANYTHING! IT'S REALLY FUNNY

Sean: I've got three degrees and my English is pretty good (not to mention two other languages), but somehow I loved it. I'm not sure spelling "brain dead" as one word is orthographically acceptable btw ;-) It's one of those films people are going to love or hate, It doesn't aspire to cinema greatness, and won't be winning any BAFTA's or the Palme D'Or, but if you're looking for an enjoyable night out, that's what you'll get. If you're looking for sub-plots, deeper meanings, and references to dozens of other films, then stay at home and rent "From Dusk Till Dawn" instead. Since you don't like the sketch show (which I've never seen), why did you even watch this film? Did the title and trailer lead you to expect a cinematic masterpiece? Were you kidnapped by aliens and help captive in a cinema? Were you meaning to watch "Slumdog Millionaire" and it took you the whole film to realise you'd gone through the wrong door?

I don't understand all the over the top negative comments on the film.... it's not a runner up for the Oscars, it's exactly what you would expect from the trailer, an hour and a half of fun entertainment. I found the film funny and had a really good time.

This film is not for a cinema experience, of some 50 year old critics. If you're at school you will laugh. What's wrong withy that?

hmm, the film was alright. The plot seemed a bit weak, and the humour probably doesnt really kick in unless you're with all your friends and feel pretty hyper :P

OH MY GOSH I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT I LET MY BOYFRIEND BRING ME TO SEE THAT FILM. NOT MY TYPE OF FILM AT ALL. I knew it was gonna be shit, but didnt think it would be that shit. I hated it. Boyfriend loved it...........i wonder why....

Kristine B.

I absolutely loved this movie, but it's like Marmite, you will utterly enjoy it or really hate it, I thought it's quirky, witty and not scary at all, but funny all the same. The movie is worth seeing, just so you can make up your own opinion:)) It's definitely different :)

Terrible film. The "fans" of this film are just simple and need to get a life. theres absolutely no comedy in it, terrible acting and no story.

dmg

not a serious movie for reviewers but very silly and funny. Actually quite subversive in its humor in that it's not obeying all the little thought rules but just being hilarious about how people really are-oh, and vampires too.

Hilarious. Not a film for highbrow critics, but I loved it. Think "From Dusk Till Dawn" only with hot girls, and a lot more fun.

Rob, can you please tell me what ledgands are? Are they found in your garden beside the gladioli? And Lewis, you haven't seen the film yet so I find it bizarre that you label Paul R as critical before you've even formed your own opinion. Go back to school nobend. For the record, this was a waste of time. Save your tenner and go see clint eastwood instead - outstanding.
