Time Out says

Basically unacceptable advertisement for the concepts of philanthropy practised by an oppressive aristocracy in capitalist Victorian England. Presented with such intractable material, director Gold conspires with a cast of British character actors (immaculate) against the unacceptable face of American child acting (Schroder, wondrous). Zzzz.

  • What's unacceptable is the review of this film by Time Out. Most films are advertisements for something and most child actors are far worse at their craft than Schroder. Yes, the film can be sappy at times, but it is sappy in an endearing, playful way. I do agree with one aspect of the review -- the cast of British actors *is* immaculate.
