6. Clash By Night (1952)
In the early 1950s, German expat Fritz Lang was offering strong female roles in what were ostensibly male oriented crime flicks: think of Marlene Dietrich in ‘Rancho Notorious’ or Anne Baxter in ‘The Blue Gardenia’. Barbara Stanwyck was the female lead in Lang’s 1952 noir, ‘Clash By Night’, but Monroe also turns up as an uninhibited young lover in what was her first major screen role.
