16. The Misfits (1962)

Monroe’s final film would also be co-star Clark Gable’s last – he had a heart attack two days after filming ended. Marilyn later claimed to hate the film, a western about an ex-stripper who hooks up with Gable’s ageing cowboy, which happened to be penned by her then-husband Arthur Miller. But the film later became celebrated both as a study of the death of the Old West and a testament to the talent of its tragic stars.
