Here is a list of things that sprang to mind while watching Debbie Isitt’s festive putting-on-a-show ordeal, in which Martin Freeman (below) stars as a cantankerous primary school teacher battling to stage a nativity play with the help of an infantilised tramp called Mr Poppy (Marc Wootton): bad Comic Relief sketches; pushy parents desperate to exploit the fact that their child can do a handstand; film posters that depict a man shrugging while surrounded by screaming children (cf ‘Daddy Day Care’, ‘Cheaper by the Dozen’ and any other crèche-com you can think of); ‘The Vicar of Dibley’; garden fêtes; seasonal Asda adverts; Michael Barrymore’s ‘My Kind of People’; a slow week on ‘X Factor’; the myth of Middle English quaintness; the bad ‘Carry On’ films; CBeebies if Ronnie Corbett was artistic director; filmmaking by committee, if that committee were made up of the esteemed members of Coventry City Council and chaired by Lenny Henry; a large-scale cloning experiment involving the kid from ‘Jerry Maguire’; films for people who don’t like films; community theatre with delusions of grandeur; Butlins during low season; a future dystopia where Simon Cowell  rules by showbiz decree; anything that Cilla Black has been involved in after her music career; tuck shops; life-insurance ads fronted by Frank Windsor; a Radio Times Xmas double issue cover circa 1988; ‘It’s a Royal Knockout’; the dank smell of village halls; the dressing-up box of a gone-to-seed hospice; John Shuttleworth sans the irony; a tartrazine-spiked reservoir; spending the entire festive season stranded at Heston Services.

Got to agree with the Time out review, cheap and amateurish. The last third of the film is mostly watching the children's nativity, if that is what you want, do yourself a favour and watch your own child's school production. That way you may actually be interested because you won't be with this one. It's no wonder the kids can't pull off a performance if they are following the lead of Mark Wooten who his annoying and unbelievable in equal measure. Give it a miss

Gary

A review that (typically) tells you more about Time Out and the self-brand projection of its writers than the thing being reviewed.

It seems that someone like jon Ross can pass judgement and everyone else dare not risk their cred by agreeing to differ ! ... Everyone I know who has seen this film really enjoyed it . It touched all emotions . For normal people who love life it's great . If you hate Xmas and live a life which revolves around shallow people who always have a glass half empty and hate kids it's not the film for you but for the rest of you ... Go and see it , the fact it's still showing after Xmas with no help from mr Ross or a biig budget speaks for itself

Tracey

I will be adding this film to my collection when it comes out. A real feel good film and fab that it is british. Not sure what reveiwers expect to see in a Christmas film anyhow. Better than the usual American dribble!

How a reviewer can be so wide of the mark is beyond me. Seems to be a cse of he thinks he is just to clever and knowing to let his face break out in a smile - because that is what happened to everyone in the cinema - to a man, woman and child we all had fun and took it for what it was - a warm funny and thankfully Bristish film suitable for all the family.

Its rather sad when reviewers just don't get the point - and then broadcast the fact. Brilliant fun on all sorts of level - unless of course you try and take it seriously. Perfect Christmas family entertainment.

Brilliant start to the Christmas holidays. We went as a family with children aged 8,11, and 13 and we all found it hilarious. For those parents who have sat through the school nativity, there is so much they will recognise here.

I can't imagine what Martin Freeman and Clarke Peters were thinking of when they agreed to do this film. It was beyond dire. I asked my 6 year old grand-daughter if she wanted to see it again and she said no. Toe-curlingly bad movie.

Debbie

Brilliant and funny ...... probably the best film iv seen in a cinema yet! :)

Loved this film brought the fun back into Christmas. There is lots of laughter and tears. My daughter who is six wants to go and see it again it was the first time she didn't speak through a film she was that entertained.

A brilliant 'feel good' film for all ages. My group consisted of ages ranging from 7 to 60 and all had a great time and a good laugh. I would certainly watch it again.

Long cat

What a great fun film. Brings the magic of Christmas back to the cinema. Lovely storyline and amazing kids full of subtle adult humour as well as laugh to tears funny situations. Almost totally British with a neat sprig of Hollywood thrown in. Puzzlingly - How do you get a transatlantic flight from Birminham Airport?. Lovely 5 Star movie

Great feel good film, if you don't like it you are taking life too seriously. We took ourselves ( all in our 30's) off to see this and all enjoyed it. It's predictable and won’t win any Oscars but great fun and rather Christmassy.... go on cheer yourselves up! PS The reviewer in the film seems to have similarities the reviewer from TimeOut!

victoria

I went to see Nativity for a party and I was excepting it to be rubbish. But... it was actually quite goood! It was funny and entertaining to watch. Not gonna buy the DVD but I will watch it when It comes on tv

Riggers

Excellent family fun. This isn't Shakespear and doesn't pretend to be. Of course the plot is contrived but my 2 girls loved it. Perfect pre-Christmas comedy.

Clare

Second time viewing tonight and just as enjoyable. Not going to win an Oscar but brilliant fun and loads of giggles. We all loved it and want to adopt 'Bob' !!

Took my daughter and her friends for her 9th birthday. We all loved it and laughed alot! Mr Poppy was the best! I was worried it would be a long film but it flew by. I would deffinately reccommend it!

Stu

My kids and I laughed more than any other film we've seen together. We were still laughing in the evening and kids at school this morning were saying how brilliant it was. Not normally my type of film, but great fun. Go and enjoy.

This is a proper Christmas feel it has the feel good factor, the required ending! The children are fantastic. This film made me laugh and made me cry as all good Christmas films should. This film is British and features the midlands. I watched with my 10 year old son and husband there was something for all of us. I would go and see it again. Bring on the DVD Cause I will most defiantly be purchasing a copy. Brill Fab and yes a bit Cheesy as it should be!!!! THis film gave me goose bumps.

Am shocked by the review here ... seems irresponsible and flippant. I thought in terms of the usual Xmas crap that nativity! was actually quite charming and - while not perfect - time well spent with my family.

Adam

Lazy and, as someone else said, smug. The review, not the film. Nativity isn't great, but it works pretty well for its target audience, and there are interesting and useful things to be said about it. David Jenkins should be ashamed of himself for not bothering to try. If I were his editor, I'd be having a quiet word.

Edwin

A really enjoyable family film which I've seem twice now - and I'll be taking more of the family over Christmas. I see it's made a creditable no6 in the weekend movie charts. Remind me to watch everything you pan, David.

Took my grandchildren. We all loved it. Going again tonight. Nice to see a film with real kids in it and not just animation. And it's British which makes a nice change from Hollywood and it's set in Coventry!
