Time Out says

The gang of magicians return for another witless, noisy adventure

Even louder and more rambling than the original, ‘Now You See Me 2’ once again follows rogue band of magicians The Four Horsemen through a series of ostentatious escapades. Forget the old line that you have to see it to believe it – you’re probably better off not seeing this. If you do insist, have some migraine medication handy.

This time around we get not one but two Woody Harrelsons; turns out his hypnotist Merritt has a twin brother, doubling the dim-witted humour. And that’s not the only update to the Horsemen line-up: in Isla Fisher’s absence, the group’s sole female spot is filled by kooky Lula (Lizzy Caplan). Mark Ruffalo returns as the FBI agent on their tail.

The plot? There’s an excess of it yet none to speak of. Living in hiding after carrying out a series of Robin Hood-style robberies, the group emerges in Macau (aka ‘the Vegas of China’) to steal a computer chip for a tech billionaire (Daniel Radcliffe, who should be better than this crude muggle magic).

It’s a complex scheme that eventually leads to a deafening London finale. Even the one memorable sequence – in which the troupe dexterously pass around a vital playing card during an extended heist – lacks the ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ sophistication that the film is going for. ‘Now You See Me 2’ routinely chases its own tail, breaking its own spell at every turn.
