‘Why deny the obvious child?’ sang Paul Simon, and we wouldn’t dream of turning down this enticingly spiky anti-romance. Adapted by first-time writer-director Gillian Robespierre from her own 2009 short, it’s the tale of a browbeaten New York stand-up performer (up-and-coming comic Jenny Slate) who meets a straight-laced guy (Jake Lacy), gets accidentally pregnant by him and has to face the possibility of an abortion. It’s hardly unfamiliar territory, but critics who saw the film at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival praised its witty script, sharp performances and refusal to take the tried-and-tested romcom route.
