Occupy!

'You can't fight redundancy with strike action. It can't be done.' So the Fisher-Bendix factory workers in Kirkby, Liverpool, occupied - twice, both times literally chasing management off the premises. Their struggle against a succession of asset-stripping owners, grotesque mismanagement, and their own gender and occupational divisions, is unusually well portrayed here. Three media are interwoven - the workers' own recollections on film; the Liverpool Everyman's theatrical reconstruction of the work-in; and Granada TV's news footage - enabling the film to avoid the turgidity of British documentary exegesis and to counterpoint different styles of 'reality'. The strategy gives the agitational work an ironical portent, and links it wonderfully well with another Kirkby film, Behind the Rent Strike.
