Yes, this first big-screen Trek adventure takes its time (among Trekkers it’s nicknamed ‘the slow motion picture’), but for those who like their sci-fi meditative, psychedelic and visually stunning there’s a lot to appreciate. As a massive, mysterious, seemingly unstoppable spaceship travels towards Earth, destroying everything in its path, Kirk and the gang are dispatched by Starfleet on a suicide mission to bring it down. The result wants too badly to be ‘2001’, but with some of the finest miniature special effects in cinema history it’s a treat for the eyes.
