For some reason, Hammer omitted Sweeney Todd from their Grand Guignol repertoire, but this cable version catches the flavour of the old firm, even down to the fiery climax. In opposition to Tod Slaughter's pre-war hiss-me-I'm-a-villain rendition, Ben Kingsley offers a rather gentle monster. In fact apart from the odd severed windpipe, the horror is limited to the camera's examination of Mrs Lovett's equivocal meat pies. Most successful is the design, especially the slimy passages and shadowy horror chambers beneath Fleet St. Joanna Lumley appears with blackened teeth and grimy drawers, but despite an itinerary which includes flagellation and cannibalism, that familiar mist of refinement obstinately refuses to disperse.

This is the 1997 version with Ben Kingsley (no singing) you bunch of idiots.

I had high expectations for this film and after seeing it for the first time all of those expectations were passed. Another masterpiece from Depp and Burton!!!! Helena was brilliant in it as well. Right I'm off to eat some pies.

Really good. Nice to see Edward Scissorhands all grown up and earning a decent living. And the Corpse Bride doing a turn as a pie-maker. Fabulous!

i cannot see how anybody could call this film crap! yes it's a musical, which in my opinion makes the audience hard to please, but if you dont like musicals then simply dont watch the film, simple! but for those who can even slightly stand musicals, it is one film definately worth seeing, ive never seen a musical this cool! plus johnny depp alone is a good enough reason to see the film :D, BRILLIANT AND DRAMATIC!!!

Enjoyed the movie, humour with a slice of the sick. Could'nt see why it was an 18 at first but that soon became abundently clear. Think Oliver meets Texas chainsaw massacre. Great performances.
