Feel your eyes widen and widen as seminal American documentary-maker Errol Morris (‘The Thin Blue Line’) leads you teasingly through the weirder-than-weird tale of Joyce McKinney, a glamour model and former Miss Wyoming from North Carolina who briefly became British tabloid fodder in the late 1970s. Older readers may remember the tale: the papers reported that McKinney, then in her late twenties, flew to London to win back her lover Kirk Anderson, a young Mormon on a mission to Britain. The saucy version, over which the red tops had a field day, was that McKinney – with the help of a pilot and bodyguard – kidnapped Anderson, held him hostage and handcuffed in a Devon cottage for three days, and forced him to have sex. McKinney denied force was involved, although the tabloids relished this angle and McKinney became a cause célèbre.

Morris’s film is simple and raucous, based mostly around a long interview with McKinney, film of her at home, archive footage, thematically related clips (including creepy Mormon animations) and conversations with the pilot, a reporter and, most bizarrely, a Korean scientist who recently cloned one of McKinney’s dogs. We hear nothing of Anderson’s side of the story, and Morris leaves it to us to ponder the case. He’s generous enough to McKinney, although there are moments when the film tips into the realm of the freakshow. This is a lighter, less significant work than his ‘Standard Operating Procedure’ or ‘The Fog of War’, but it’s engrossing and pleasingly slippery with the facts.

  • From the start I felt really bad for her. But I kept wondering how did she get all the money to hire so many people to travel to Europe to rescue her love. Well I'm sorry but if you fufill freaky fantasies (like the showed) well there you go. I'm not sure whether she was hurt for losing him, or pissed off that he left her

  • Truthteller - your 'truth' would be clearer and more convincing if you spell-checked and proofread your comments. Just a thought.

  • Wow, this is entertaining, a McKinney employee trolling the web, inadvertently increasing the publicity for the film! Or is it Joyce herself? This film is barking, in a most excellent way.

  • Please remove the photograph of Miss McKinney from your website, as it was one of the ones STOLEN from her luggage by Mark Lipson in September of 2009. You have NO modeling release and she can sue you for that. Nor does she want her picture to be used to advertise Morris' sick perverted Mockumentary which slanders and defames her.

  • By the way, your libelous that she "abducted "a man (who in reality is 300 pounds) subjects YOU to a lawsuit yourself. Ms. McKinney was not even CHARGED with kidnaping and raping a man in 1977! THAT was the Mormon PRSS HOAXl Morris gives that false impression in his film, which causes idiots like you to falsely accuse her. Maybe you can be subpoenaed for the lawsuit as an example of how he cause people to hold her up to public ridicule by making it appear that she was guilty of crimes which she was never even CHARGED with, much less guilty of! And by the way, you need a Preview on your column so we can do spell checking and correct our typos. For example my piece above should read that Lipson was a "PRODUCER" not "prosecutor". At least we CORRECT our mistakes, Hope you're man enough to do the same.

  • Errol Morris is being sued for twenty million dollars for slandering Joyce McKinney. He pretended to be doing a TV series for Showtime network on people whose lives were being destroyed by Tabloids to get footage of her, and while he was interviewing her, his sleazy producer ransacked her luggage and stole her valuable memorabilia collection of photos and family albums as well as two film treatments she had written herself and he made copies of everything she had then illegally used them in a libelous Porno Doc, which is NOT the TRUE JOCYE McKINNEY STORY! DO NOT waste your time or money going to see this film Tabloid, as it is disrespectful to the subject and unfairly holds her up to public ridicule. She is now an elderly partially blind, sweet little old lady and prosecutor Lipson was directly involved in the murder of her service dog. He was so desperate for pictures of her that he also stalked her home, illegally photographed her, and trespassed at her place and physically assaulted her telling her her dog would die if she didn't sign a paper absolving him from the studio burglary of her luggage. Then he was directly involved in the death of her beloved service dog who was brutally tortured and murdered in the man, causing her to have a nervous breakdown. The film has severely traumatized her and put her 81 year old mother into the hospital in intensive care. Ms. McKinney's parents are suing Morris as well. Morris was also sued by the subject of his Thin Blue Line film, because he mistreated Randall Dale Adams as well. This perverted film TABLOID will be disqualified from the Oscars because it is NOT FACTUAL, and due to his poor ethic in the way her pictures were stolen and the way she was exploited and her TRUE story ignored with Reckless Disregard for Truth. Ms McKinney thought Morris had more intellect than what he turned out to have and that he could handle a heavy investigative piece. Instead, the idiot turned a serious story whiabout her ordeal with ancult that has destoryed thosands of lives, into a silly sex comedy. It makes one wonder if the Morn cult even bankrooled thismsick poerverted film, wihich everyone is calling a Mockumentary. Arethere any prducers out there who want to do the TURE JOcye McKinney sotyr? IF so call her mamager at 718-406-1089 in New York. Thanks.
