Melody’s Echo Chamber

Melody’s Echo Chamber is the pseudonym of French chanteuse Melody Prochet. Her album ‘Melody’s Echo Chamber’ is out now on Domino Records.

Simon Raymonde

Simon Raymonde was the bass player and songwriter in The Cocteau Twins. He now runs the Bella Union record label.

‘“The Misfits” is my favourite film of all time, and yet always a hard one to watch. The breakdown of Monroe’s marriage to Arthur Miller and the alcohol problems of John Huston, followed by the subsequent death of both Gable and Monroe shortly after the film finished, suggests it took more out of them than any other movie had – and maybe all this exhaustion and tension gave the film its emotional punch. When Montgomery Clift frees the captured mustangs, it’s the most romantic gesture he could make.’

Josie Rourke

Josie Rourke is the artistic director of the Donmar Warehouse theatre.

‘In “Broadcast News”, Albert Brooks declares his love for Holly Hunter in a beautifully desperate tirade – his final plea being that his rival William Hurt is so good-looking and plausible that he might be the devil. Three beautiful performances, and (spoiler alert) one of the great films in which no one gets the girl.

‘I was born in 1976 so “Superman II” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark” had the biggest impact on my idea of romantic heroines. Where are the Margot Kidders, the Karen Allens of today? These women would stab you in the heart with a bread knife rather than submit. You believed Kidder was a hard-bitten reporter chasing a story and that Allen ran a dive bar in Nepal. They weren't exactly feminist archetypes but they were sexy because they had a sexual history, not because they were a virgin waiting for a vampire.’

Kate Rusby

Kate Rusby is one of the UK’s finest folk singers. Her latest LP ‘20’ is available now on Pure Records.
