Unappealing whimsy, based on a Bernard Malamud short story, about an elderly Jewish tailor (Mostel) plagued by a bad back, a sick wife, and a business destroyed by fire, who suddenly finds an angel in his kitchen offering to help. The angel (Belafonte) is not only black but Jewish, allowing for some treacly platitudes about racial togetherness. Directed with discretion, some humour, and a soggy performance from Mostel.
