Time Out says

The brothel as soul of the community, charitable institution, or social therapy on a par with raffia work? This musical avoids sensitive issues like the clap, settling for stock tarts-with-hearts, loyal regulars, virginal jocks, and an outraged clean-up-the-state prude (DeLuise) of monstrously miscamped proportions. Clumsy chorus-lining, a penchant for ostrich plumes, and a tinny musical sameness betray the film's stage origins. One good number: Durning's Governor tripping a neat political 'Sidestep'. But the dialogue is Texas crude, the sentiment Bible Belt coy, and the songs conveyor-belt Broadway: stale air on a G-string.

  • Loved this film! I never saw this back when it came out in 1982, but I think it's fun, hilarious, a solid story and great to see Dolly Parton, Burt Reynolds and especially Charles Durning in catchy musical comedy roles. I've read that it's considered mediocre, but I don't get it. The movie really works and is just non violent overall, silly, sexy fun loving film.

  • Neither my 27 year old daughter or myself enjoyed this production. The producers did not bother to develop any characters so neither of us had any attachment to the characters. The singing wasn't enjoyable either.
