I love this film but I can see how Kaye can be described as charmless. He was obviously very talented, but an insufferable egotistical monster in real life, and once you know this, can you see it shining through in his performances.

I remember this coming on tv when I wS about 11 back in the 70's and I thought it was the funniest film I'd ever seen, I bought the DVD to watch with my daughter and she loved it too. To call one of the biggest stars of his era "charmless" is as ridiculous as it is wrong, how did the non-entity who wrote that manage to get a platform to write that stuff, the guys clearly an elitist idiot with no sense of fun.

Danny Kaye is "charmless?" I think it irresponsible to make this point unless you're also going to mention that you are the only person in the history of human civilization to hold such a bizarre and twisted opinion.

An acceptable storyline which ensures a fast pace and direction and several set pieces that are film comedy classics. Kaye is reined in by the structure but still has enough room to improvise, this is where he is at his best. Good songs, Glynis Johns, the flaggon with the Dragon, the induction of the Knight, Rathbone is perfect. This is one of the top comedy films ever.
