Time Out says

Leaden version of John Patrick's tearjerking play, set in a World War II army hospital in Burma, about a dour, chip-on-shoulder Scottish soldier who gradually discovers the meaning of friendship after learning that he has only weeks to live. Todd won some plaudits at the time for his stubborn performance, but subsequent appearances confirmed that the wooden look was habitual.

This is my all time favourite film, it always makes me cry, Richard Todd was very believable as the proud, angry Soldier.

"Author TM" needs his head examined. This is a touching and beautifully acted film, especially by Todd, who deservedly received a Best Actor nomination. Patricia Neal is at her very best here, and even Reagan acquits himself very well indeed. Only one with a heart of stone could so snottily dismiss this unheralded little classic!
