Time Out says

Turgid epic set in the 23rd year of the Thirty Years War (that's 1641, to save you looking it up) in which Cockney Caine leads his troops into a fertile valley which, just for once, they decide not to pillage. Reason? Caine has met refugee philosopher Omar Sharif and they've reached a mutual understanding. Clear-as-mud plotting and Tower of Babel accents don't help the allegory to make its point. A solid snore.

Peter Holmes

Beautifully shot film in a beautiful part of the Alps. Brian Blessed being stabbed with Capt Caine's spiked helmet is memorable. Excellent John Barry soundtrack - I played the LP for many years.
