Time Out says

A highly watchable Western - probably Sturges' best - stunningly shot by Robert Surtees, and with an excellent script by William Bowers (The Gunfighter, Support Your Local Sheriff) which breathes new life into the old yarn about the outlaw-turned-sheriff (Taylor) trying to resist the blandishments of a former colleague he rescues from hanging (Widmark), who then relentlessly tries all he knows to coax/force his old buddy into helping him locate the whereabouts of the buried proceeds of a bank robbery they pulled. Widmark (especially) and Taylor are both excellent, and the climactic Indian attack (with shoot-out) in a ghost town is superbly staged.
