Given the effect the first ‘Twilight’ film had on teens, it’s appropriate that the sequel is a study of sexual and romantic obsession. When pallid, principled vampire Edward (Robert Pattinson) leaves town, his chaste girlfriend, Bella (Kristen Stewart), moons and mourns for months. The usual teen pursuits don’t interest her: she sneers at shopping and only opts for sport or cinema if they bring her closer to Edward. Then solace arrives in the bulging biceps of Jacob (Taylor Lautner), Bella’s childhood friend-turned-boy-hulk.

It’s not exactly a celebration of female independence, but ‘New Moon’ still has an expert handle on its young audience. Near-kisses and sexual frustration abound. Boys become attractive yet also dangerous when they come of age – and the good ones keep the monsters in check. This time, the monsters aren’t merely vampires, but werewolves: spectacular CG creatures that snarl and pounce their way through several enjoyable action sequences, then transform back into buff, topless young studs… Yep, ‘New Moon’ knows what it’s doing.

Plot-wise it’s a slow starter, but gains momentum when Bella develops a taste for adrenaline in the hope of catching a glimpse of her vampiric protector. Motorbike rides and deathly dives follow, along with a scenic race to Italy to meet uber-vampire Michael Sheen (always a pleasure). Welcome comedy comes from Bella’s schoolmates, notably Jessica (Anna Kendrick), who wearily deconstructs the symbolism in zombie movies while bemoaning the lack of hot guys. Is this ‘New Moon’ defending its fanbase and pre-empting criticism about its transparent agenda? Natalie and Bella are intelligent young women, yet ruled by their hormones – plenty of room for audience identification there.  ‘New Moon’ is little more than a skilful soap opera, but it’s still enjoyable escapism – even if you’re old and wise enough to see through it.

So let down by this!. Big fan of the book and whilst edward and jacob are good :) Kristen Stewart is rubbish!. Maybe she can act, but not in this film. She just over blinks, sighs and stutters the whole time. The worst part is when the volturi are about to kill edward ( which would never happen as he can read minds and would be able to escape) and she scream for them not to. Just watch that part..its so cringe worthy! She made the film hard to watch!. Bella is more emotional than how kristen acts which is why i dont think she should be bella. The film was pointless really....

Yes, three stars is about right for this tasteful offering to the mindset of teeenage adolescence. The movie skilfully enters the self-centred, obsessional world of teenage angst . . . where the real world is replaced by one in which vampires and werewolves are the principal peer groups . However, what gives the film its superior class is the music of Alexandre Desplat . . . . . which is beautfifully orchestrated in the final sequence and the credits.

Twilight was good; entertaining, well stylised and not as nauseating as I expected. New Moon however was a disappointment; far too long with a corny script and some amazingly wooden acting - most notably by (gratuitously topless for most of the film) Taylor Lautner. Cringe worthy scenes of him taking off his t-shirt, running towards camera, his glossy locks flowing behind him like he's just had a promotional Pantene experience, prompted loud laughter from the audience. It was a packed cinema and I think everyone who wasn't comatose by this point had a hearty chuckle. However, bravo to Kristen Stewart who did sulky so well, and Robert Pattinson who makes an iron deficiency look very attractive. In sum, I wouldn't waste your money going to see it unless you have an irresistible urge to self-harm. Even then there are cheaper and less enduring ways to do so. ©Johanna Lambert

What I like about this film is that the lead roles aint good looking! As a man I don't find her attractive and he looks like an Alien but this was 100 times better than 1! I was rooting for the Wolves!

Absolutely loved the fist, Edward hooked me! had to watch NM twice to love it, not as good as I expected but still loved it, can't wait till next to see Edward! If only I was 20 years younger ..... lol!

Ryo

Boring film, no better than the first one. At least i didnt have to put up with Ed making faces for the 1st half. The lead duo really need to find alternate careers possibly as planks or something, although Keanu reaves manages with only 2 expressions so possibly they will get more work, who knows. if you want to see a decent vampire film, try NEAR DARK.

I liked Twilight better than New Moon, since NM didn't have those emotional tension between Edward and Bella... Its very slow and in some moments, boring. I can feel the lack of the music which was absolutely GREAT in the first one. Since I'm a HUGE fan of these books, I must say that Catherine did a better job on building an emotion and Chris is better for the action parts... Since this is emotional drama between a vampire and a girl - a director should be someone who doesn't think that "kissing scene" is "waisting of movie minutes".

Katy

Can't understand how Time Out thinks this could POSSIBLY rank as an average movie. If this is how low the standards have sunk for modern cinema I, well... I guess I won't be going to the cinema. Seriously bad stuff here.

KdH

Whaaaa???? You guys all LIKED this film??? I'm afraid I don't see what the hype is about. As far as I could see, what there was of a plot was very slow and very thin; the special effects were cartoonish at best; the music was overwhelming; and the acting was terrible - big waste of time and money really.

short show

I checked out the trailer - and got dragged along to the movie by a fan, Judy never again my girl. Where's the horror, where's the romance, where's the plot, what's the point? A great money spinner but a flat tedious ride to nowhere - hey Judy I'm not going to the next one whatever's on offer next time girl: oh maybe then ...

I agree with a few people, there are a couple of bits in the film that i cringed at, some acting was stiff but overall they did a really good job. i loved the wolves in the forest chasing vampires, the music, the vivid colours, it emphasized how unreal bellas new world is, as for the scene with bella and edward in the forest running/skipping, its mearly a vision that alice has shown aro to delight him, make it so fairytail that it encapsulates him. people need to read the books then watch the films, you get so much more meaning out of the films that way, every look, every sigh, all accounted for and explained in the book. definitly a film u shud see, even if you do go to the cinema with pre-conceptions. a massive well done to chris for going against the grain and creating something truely unique and inspiring

We went to see this film tonight, and were expecting the worst, having read some of the previous reviews. We were actually pleasantly surprised. We enjoyed the film, thought that it was even better than the first film, and are looking forward to the next one in the series next year.

Ok, so there were some good things and some bad. Book 2 is very slow and not my favourite in the series and I guess thats why this film also feels a bit slow. Story doesn't get going properly for ages and and some stage I even looked at my watch! I was also expecting to see more on the wolf pack (dynamics in the pack and Jakes struggle) and though Edward was just a big misery. Oh, he is just annoying me endlessly. Then the music to this film - Twilight was so fab - what a good soundtrack it had! New Moon was boring and tedious - all this violin stuff and the music did not set the scene (like it did in Twilight). The special effects were also pretty awful - the wolfes - I don't know... expected more! On the good side - loved Taylor Lautner as Jake. He is just how I imagine him and I think his acting was pretty good. And wow - did he look good!! The 'taking of the shirt' sequence will stay with me forever ;-) So, somehow a bit disappointed but kind of expected it.

This was boring....I haven't read the books so I didn't know what was going to happen and I still thought this was lame.... I nejoyed the first film - the aesthetic was much better in it as well as the direction. The vampires and special effects in this film were way worse than the first film. Mostly though, it was just boring.

I thought the film was amaxing tbh, and cant wait for the next 2, brilliant stroy line :) and made me more excited for the other ones

Overall:- deeply flawed in its plot, pacing and even in some of its computer generated graphics, but still enjoyable. Kristen Stewart is really beautiful. ... The good:- Kristen Stewart is beautiful. The vampire aesthetic in this film, as in the first one, is awesome. ... The bad:- The pacing of this film is all wrong and the plot comes across as contrived. The film starts out far too slow, almost directionless and verging on boring, then it suddenly seems to rush things and gloss over things that could have been handled with greater depth and dramatic sensitivity, like the question as to the loss of one's soul for instance. Some of the acting, especially in some of the more emotion-driven scenes, is a little wooden. Maybe it would be accurate as a representation of teenagers, but Edward Cullen is supposed to be 109 years old. ... The ugly:- Some of the computer graphics are just terrible - particularly in the second half of the scene with the vampire with dreadlocks. Without wanting to spoil things [MINI-SPOILER ALERT]:- ... ... the creatures that you see which are supposed to look vaguely realistic - just don't. It's really awful. ... And don't get me started on the vision of Edward and Bella practically skipping through the woods. The audience actually broke out in fits of [deeply inappropriate] laughter at that point. ... It's really difficult to rate this film. I enjoyed it, and it is far, far better than the Vampire's Assistant. But it's still a deeply flawed film and a poor sequel to the first Twilight movie. Even so, I did enjoy it, and I nearly gave it 3 stars... but I couldn't quite bring myself to do it.

Sophie Keay :)

I liked Twilight but New Moon is boring. There are no connections between the scenes. The colours are artificial, I dont like the Cullens new hairstyle at all. I think that C. Hardwicke did better job.

I really don't understand how people can give New Moon 1 or 2 stars! It's a great film, if a little slow to start with, but soon gets into the swing of things. It's impossible to compare New Moon to Twilight because they are just so different to each other! The acting is brilliant and all the best parts from the book have been included - go and watch it and see for yourself, I can't wait to go and see it again!

samara

yep - I agree with pretty much everyone here - nowhere near as good as the first one. Direction, acting and special effects were not good. Worst of all was it was boring....

Lauren

AMAZING FILM! I will admit its not as good as the first one, but is still pretty cool. Go see it!!

Twihard

I waited a year for this movie and was VERY upset. There was absolutely no chemistry between the characters. the first movie captured the raw emotions of teenage angst, love and sexual tension which is what made it so beautiful to watch. The movie is based on a book so they should have focused on the characters and the dialogue more then they did on the special effects. The movie was poorly directed and produced, special effects were ok and the fight scenes were good, but overall - it was a HUGE letdown. I watched the first movie twice at the cinema last year, I was sorry that I saw this one at all. BRING BACK CATHERINE HARDWICK!

skye

heh - I just realised that the only reason this film has a 3 star user rating is because all the little teens rated it 5 stars bfore it even came out - this movie only deserves 1 or 2 stars at most - it was a steaming pile of emotional rubbish

twigirl

I agree with the one star people here - this was not as good as the first one - I almost fell asleep. Very sad coz Twilight is one of my fav films EVER!!

katie

I was sooooooo disappointed!!! - The 1st rocked - this one totally ruined the whole feel of the first film and the book! I'm a huge fan...but I seriously can only give it one star......
