Up All Night

CBBC’s long-running pre-teen pop-magazine show ‘The Friday Download’ hits the big screen by landing its gang of perky presenters in a fog-shrouded haunted mansion deep in the country. There are spectral presences in the corridors, creepy brother and sister hosts who maintain their parents are ‘away’, a pudgy ginger paranormal investigator on the loose, and, most frightening of all – no internet or phone signal. Eeeeek! Such is the way modern technology habits are reshaping the familiar ‘Scooby Doo’ formula.

‘Up All Night’ is breezy enough for the first half-hour, with some jolly low-budget frissons unfolding as goofy Bobby Lockwood takes care of the comedy, and Shannon Flynn does Ms Sensible to Richard Wisker’s smooth alpha teen. All this runs out of steam pretty quickly though, and shoehorning in pop performances from The Vamps and Bars And Melody is an awkward fit. As a 90-minute pick ’n’ mix, it delivers what you’d expect, while keeping everything squeaky clean, but overall it’s workmanlike at best
