Oscar predictions for 2012

Academy Awards: our predictions of who will win (and lose) on the night

We now have the full list of nominations for this year’s Academy Awards, which take place in Los Angeles on February 26 2012. As expected, Bafta juggernaut 'The Artist' and ‘The Descendants’ lead the pack at this stage – but can they keep up the momentum all the way to Oscars night?

Every year, Time Out’s film team put its collective neck on the line to predict who will win awards in the ten main categories. We’ve also politely pointed out a few places where we think the Academy has overlooked films worthy of contention. And this is only the start of our Oscars 2012 coverage: keep coming back for more gossip, news, predictions and coverage of Oscar night itself.

Best Picture

The nominees: The Artist’, ‘The Descendants’, ‘Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close’, ‘The Help’, ‘Hugo’, ‘Midnight in Paris’, ‘Moneyball’, ‘The Tree of Life’, ‘War Horse

There are nine films vying for the big prize in 2012, and it’s surely between ‘The Artist’ (pictured), which swept the Baftas, and ‘The Descendants’ to take home the gold. Will the Oscars go for a celebration of old Hollywood in the form of ‘The Artist’? Or will they worry that it is actually – oh my God – French and silent and instead go for the homegrown ‘The Descendants’, a tale of life lessons and emotional journeys and parenting.

Who will win? ‘The Artist’.

Who should win? ‘The Artist’.

Who’s missing? It’s a shame to see no love in this category for ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’.

The Tree of Life should be nominated for the worst picture of the year.

You are so wrong regarding the Best Animated Feature. first "Arrietty" can't be nominated since it was released in Japan in 2010 and will be released in USA in 2012 so it belongs to next year's Oscars. second, 'Tintin' also couldn't get a nomination since it's mition-capture which the academy does not consider as animation (which is totally stupid). Third...'Puss In Boots'? really? I havn't seen the film myself but I doubt it will beat "Rango" for the oscar.

and I'm really upset "Winnie The Pooh" and "Rio" didn't get nominations..I mean. seriously, "Kung Fu Panda 2"!?

Oh, and in the foreign language category Almodovar couldn't have been nominated since Spain's entry for the award was "Black Bread".

Is there ANYWHERE in London that is showing the Oscars for some sort of Oscar Party? Can't believe there isn't!

I'm with you on most of these but I don't think Puss In Boots stands a chance - Rango will win, surely. I would put money on Octavia Spencer winning supporting actress, too.

No nominations for Shame of Melancholia is an absolute joke

What a limp selection. Half the nominated films should not be there! Brad Pitt for Moneyball (NOT The Tree Of Life). Jonah Hill (for staring into the camera and not blinking with his mouth open!) Gimme a break. And where are Albert Brooks, Kirstin Dunst, laughing Lars et al. The foreign film and best song categories continue to be a joke. Oh well it is after the Oscars.
