Best of the year 2009: theatre

Londoners’ pockets were at their emptiest, but seats kept getting filled

Jerusalem at the Royal Court

Jez Butterworth’s drama is Time Out’s show of the year. It’s a rare beast: a new drama with a big cast; a state-of-the-nation play which is a drug-addled comedy. It has everything going for it: Mark Rylance was born to play charismatic outsider Johnny Byron (a shaman in the shadow of Swindon); director Ian Rickson adds focus to the script’s shenanigans; the Royal Court, where it was developed, is once more a powerhouse for new writing.

'Jerusalem' re-opens at the Apollo Theatre from January 28

I have no interest in cycling but this was a gripping play. I'm looking forward to seeing their next productions, in fact I shall make an effort to do so.

Pedal Pusher was absolutely spell binding. As a cyclist the idea of protesting the greatest cycling story of all time seemed doubtful on such a small scale but the beautiful way they represented the races got my heart racing!
