Time Out's guide to the best restaurants in Shoreditch

For a sumptuously satisfying feed, Shoreditch is a safe bet. Expect fantastic steaks at Hawksmoor, and if you're not feeling carnivorous, you can find delightful vegan fare at Saf. Check out Time Out's guide to the best restaurants in Shoreditch for even more options.

  • Hawksmoor

North American, 157 Commercial Street, London, E1 6BJ

This Spitalfields steakhouse has wooed much of London since opening in 2006; word-of-blog has only served to create an even bigger buzz around the restaurant and its food.

  • Saf

      Vegetarian, 152-154 Curtain Road, London, EC2A 3AT

The provision of vegan, mostly raw food is Saf's raison d'être, and the concept is carried off in style, suggesting healthy Californian cool instead of crank-diet hippie austerity.

  • Hoxton Apprentice

Modern European, 16 Hoxton Square, London, N1 6NT

The Apprentice's main draw is its location, with a front terrace looking right on to Hoxton Square. It's a great place to hang out and have weekend brunch.

  • Rochelle Canteen

Modern European, Rochelle School, Arnold Circus, London, E2 7ES

It's clear that Margot Henderson (of Arnold & Henderson, the team behind Rochelle Canteen) shares a food philosophy with her husband Fergus (founder of St John).

  • Fifteen

      Italian, 15 Westland Place, London, N1 7LP

Jamie Oliver's charity operation is still quietly providing chef apprenticeships to directionless young people, despite no longer being the most prominent of his numerous enterprises.

  • Boho Mexica

      Mexican, 151-153 Commercial Street, London, E1 6BJ

Why serious Mexican food is so little seen in London is anyone's guess; only a handful of places attempt to do it justice. Boho Mexica is definitely does.

  • Great Eastern Dining Room

      South-East Asian, 54-56 Great Eastern Street, London, EC2A 3QR

Stepping into Will Ricker's slick, assured bar-restaurant from traffic-snarled Great Eastern Street is a relief. The dining room is decked with retro furniture and wall hangings, calming dark wood and simple, modernist chandeliers.

  • Rivington Grill

      British, 28-30 Rivington Street, London, EC2A 3DZ

Tthe Rivington gives off great vibes. The whitewashed dining room looks down on an equally stripped-down bar where food is also served.

  • Eyre Brothers

      Mediterranean, 70 Leonard Street, London, EC2A 4QX

Not only is the menu here unique – a sophisticated take on Iberian peninsula food – but the place has a distinctive character.
    See Eyre Brothers review

  • Furnace

      Italian, 1 Rufus Street, London, N1 6PE

Not a typical Italian restaurant decor, the interior of Furnace has more of a Swedish aesthetic- with beech wood furniture and wooden flooring- but the cooking is strictly eccellente.

  • The Princess of Shoreditch

    French, 76 Paul Street, London, EC2A 4NE

Tucked away on the City / Shoreditch border, not far from Old Street, the grand old Princess of Shoreditch is a chic urban bar and restaurant which was completely refurbished in October 2009.
See The Princess of Shoreditch review

  • Open Kitchen

      British, 40 Hoxton Street, London, N1 6LR

Given that Open Kitchen is the restaurant where students from the London City Hospitality Centre (part of Hackney Community College) practise their skills on paying punters, you'd be forgiven for allowing it a bit of leeway with standards.
