'My Summer of Love', 10pm, BBC2
This lyrical and at times bitingly intense study of two teenage girls from very different backgrounds confirms former documentarist Pawlikowski (of ‘Last Resort’ note) among Britain’s key contemporary filmmakers. Press brings wide-eyed innocence and sinewy inner strength as the working-class lass stepping into the world of the rather posher Tamsin, expelled from boarding school and now at a loose end at home in Yorkshire. Blunt in turn conjures up Tamsin’s invigorating rebel spirit and a disturbing controlling streak, as these unlikely allies discover that opposites, which at first appear emotionally complementary, can also prove a very combustible combination. It takes something special to steal the film from another bravura Considine turn as Mona’s born-again sibling, who’s turned his pub into a centre for Christian meditation (!), but between them, steal it the girls do. Not to be missed.
