‘John is gay and he wants to find out why.’ For those who equate the all-singing, all-dancing actor and his killer smile with self-assurance, this opening line may come as a surprise. Barrowman, the first guinea pig in this three-part documentary series (violinist Vanessa Mae and athlete Colin Jackson will also be deconstructing their biological make-up), gracefully strips down to reveal an itch that needs ferocious scratching: is sexuality shaped by the number of kinks in our pre-pubescent paths, chosen by the individual or genetically predetermined?
While speculatively searching for a ‘gay gene’, Barrowman talks to experts about DNA, the possibility of hormonal effects in the womb, and momentarily suspends his identity in the name of the authority that is science (‘I’m straight?’). This enlightening journey of self-discovery consciously focuses on Barrowman’s charisma and his desire to revisit his childhood – cue limited-edition Barbie dolls, adorable parents and female best friends. But back in the lab, tests are proving fruitless and Barrowman’s initial interest morphs into a desperate need to justify who he is.
‘John Barrowman: The Making Of Me’ 9pm-10pm, BBC1, Thursday July 24 2008.
