E4 launch a new animation about a middle class homosexual couple, offensive for all the wrong reasons
![]() |
Jokes about sperm donation, gay porn and HIV can be funny, but it’s insulting that E4 felt viewers might think this show is. It’s based on a 1999 short film and really, it’s easy to see why a series hasn’t been commissioned before now. The characters are modelled on Lego- or Playmobil-style figures for no reason other than that they look a bit silly, and a long string of ‘gags’ about quiche and butch lesbians fail to raise even a snigger. It’s clear that the creators are targetting the ‘Adult Swim’ market, but this pales in comparison to the likes of ‘Robot Chicken’. Why Alan Cumming was willing to lend his voice to this is anyone’s guess. Shame on everyone involved.

Years ago I worked at the AIDS Memorial Quilt. Many of my colleagues were HIV positive. We approached the subject with maturity and discussed it openly. Some of them even made a game about finding shapes in their sarcoma lesions as one would with clouds.
I personally found Rick and Steve funny. There are many subjects dealt in this program that are very serious indeed. However, I think we shouldn't take ourselves so seriously all the time. We should be able to make fun of ourselves every so often. Life is serious enough to have to see everything with sobriety.
Regarding the stereotypes, we can find these stereotypes in most programs in television. It is obvious that these stereotypes have more entertainment value than watching a character that is less flamboyant, awkward, etc. I doubt that the intention of the producers was to accurately represent the gay community. Their objective was probably trying to entertain.
