Recycling made easy
Ever wondered how much land, food, energy and water it takes to keep you alive round the clock?
The energy we consume, and the waste we produce, are known as our
ecological footprint. Now an ambitious new scheme led by Mayor Ken
Livingstone and the Greater London Authority is set to raise awareness
about the real cost of living on the planet and suggest ways to reduce
that footprint. The 'Future London: Footprints of a Generation'
roadshow, which runs at the Old Truman Brewery between September 8 and
16 and then at the Science Museum September 25 to October 1, looks at
practical tips as well as big ideas. Even simple choices can make an
impact, such as buying organic apples or changing your car. Go for a
hybrid car that has less impact on the air you breathe, and on the
planet. Even better: walk. It’s not the most glamorous form of
transport, but it’s pollution free and good for you too. The Health
Education Authority recommends 30 minutes of brisk walking per day to
prevent coronary heart disease. If you need some speed, try a bike. To
make your consumer choices easier, Footprints of a Generation will
point you in the direction of green energy suppliers and organic food
shops, offer recycling advice, and highlight the many outdoor spaces
London has to offer. 'My long-term vision is for London to become the
world's leading environmental city,' says the Mayor. 'We are making
great strides forward. We are the only city to make a significant
switch from driving cars to using buses.Let's complete the journey
together.'
