St Margaret’s Hotel
This bustling townhouse hotel is enormous - there are 64 rooms - but it retains a homely ambience. The friendly feel is down to the Marazzi family, who have run the place for 52 years. The rooms are simple, comfy and relatively spacious; all have reading lights and fans in the summer. The huge triple rooms are especially good for families. Bathrooms are shared, but they’re spotless; the watering-can showerheads are another plus. Rooms at the back have views of two gardens: the Duke of Bedford’s formal affair and the hotel’s own little green patch. Guess which one you can go in.
