Andaz Liverpool Street
It’s all change at the former Great Eastern Hotel. A faded railway hotel until its £70m overhaul by Conran in 2000, it became a Hyatt in 2006, and was duly converted in 2007 into the first property of the group’s new Andaz portfolio. Andaz means ‘personal style’ in Hindi, and the name reflects the new vibe: out with gimmicky menus, closet-sized minibars and even the lobby reception desk, and in with down-to-earth service, eco-friendliness and uncomplicated luxury. Despite the changes, bedrooms still wear the regulation style-mag uniform: Eames chairs, chocolate shagpile rugs and white Frette linens, and management is keen to maintain the hotel’s East End character (City boys like to hire the hotel’s very own Freemasons temple, which also stages comedy nights). Although the area has its fair share of decent eating and drinking options, you won’t have to set foot outside: Catch (formerly Fishmarket), Japanese Miyako (Myabi) and the soon-to-be-renamed Aurora (serving modern European cuisine) are just some of the in-house options. Of the rooms, the open-plan suites are the best.
