Rookery
Hidden away down a tiny alley linking Cowcross Street with St John’s Lane, the Rookery is a kind of Dickensian Tardis. You’d never guess from the outside that this unassuming row of 18th-century buildings conceals a wonderfully comfortable hotel. Like its sibling Hazlitt’s, it’s decorated in period style, with Gothic oak beds, plaster busts and clawfoot bathtubs, without neglecting modern comforts: Egyptian cotton sheets and plush towels draped over heated towel racks; broadband internet and LCD TVs. All the rooms, surprisingly generous in size, are individually furnished. Topping it all is the Rook’s Nest, a huge split-level suite with views of St Paul’s. Judging from the guest book, no one ever wants to leave.
