Certain touches remind you that this is one of a growing chain, but this four-year-old hotel has charm. Location is key: it’s set in a lovely, leafy, cobblestone square, next to Smithfield Market with its lively restaurants, bars and pubs. The reception is stylishly kitted out with a lilac and cream chequered floor, exotic plants and a petite champagne bar, while purples, dove-grey and black wood dominate the rooms and two suites. Rooms are equipped to the standard you’d expect, with nice extra touches including free broadband access and creative lighting; for something more luxurious, the hotel’s new suite – the Square – has a four-poster bed, Bose sound system and original artworks. With the City and Inns of Court nearby, the clientele is largely businessmen and lawyers during the week, but lower weekend prices attract non-business types for the weekend. The gym, a subterranean brasserie and a suite of meeting rooms with a rooftop bar complete the picture.
